I hadn't read that one before. Pretty cool stuff. After reading that, I ended up reading a couple of other Gina Arnold reviews on that site. I don't agree with about half of what she says, but she's insightful and I prefer her to the majority of critics. She seems to have disappeared though.

I hadn't seen this before either.
Gina almost made me wanna hear "Sunrise...", almost, but then the moment passed.
I do recommend her book "RTE 666: The Road to Nirvana."

I did resent her generalization that no guy wants to hear about the vulnerability of the performer, and that this was somehow new to PW... it had been a topic of his since always...within your reach anyone? That's always been the attraction...that he could break your heart with one song, and immediately crack you up or shake your ass with the next one. S/G maybe lacked the humor/loud guitars to balance the vulnerability, but those songs really wouldn't have fit and could have detracted from the tone of the album.
He did say that Everything Goes Wrong was written about that time, but never made its way on the record..and I'd bet that's why.

Gina Arnold has an 'us against them' theme to her writing, and she comes across as a fan first, critic second. I'm okay with that; like I've said before, I think she's unfairly maligned.

When I read this, I ignored the byline and dove right into the review. I assumed the author was a guy, and criticising other guys for not admitting vulnerability.
My only thoughts are:
1. It's nice to read something appreciative about this album (I loved both this and Eventually and I'm constantly on the defensive about both); and
2. I am nothing but encouraged when any woman digs Westerberg, for whatever reason. Too many of my rock heros have a predominantly male audience.

In truth there's no shortage of 'sensitive' male singer-songwriter types charging wildly at the airwaves in a crazed effort to prove their sensitivity. James Blunt is the latest example, and if you've had the misfortune to hear the United Kingdom conquering saccharine behemoth that is 'Beautiful' I can only apologise for the sins of my country. Some of us fought against it. What so many of these parasitic bed wetters lack is the other Westerberg quality, a sense of the absurd, and a sense of humour. The quality that can make you laugh in the middle of what had hitherto seemed to be the most depressing song on earth, and it's because of this that the genuinely 'fuck it all, the universe is ending' songs stand out.

It's nice to read something appreciative about this album (I loved both this and Eventually and I'm constantly on the defensive about both); and Even her Eventually review (check the archives) was positve...sort of. (Save for what she said about the 'under a big horse' line.) I don't believe she's ever given Paul a crappy review. Suicaine, if I remember correctly, got a number of positive reviews, some from more mainstream outlets. I think People named it album of the week. 2. I am nothing but encouraged when any woman digs Westerberg, for whatever reason. Too many of my rock heros have a predominantly male audience. I always thought Paul, compared to other artists, had a lot of female fans--obviously fewer than a dozen of them regularly post here.

I remember reading that review and disagreeing w/ only one thing:her criticism of "Best Thing" because I love that song. It's a great review and one I like reading more than once. Thanks for posting it.

I demand that Westerberg-loving drunks get their due! God knows what would be linked to a liking for late Scott Walker.
