Hi all. I manage a record store here this teeming metropolis known as Evansville, IN where one of the (very few) perks is early access to new releases. So it was w/moderate excitement this morning that I snared my copy of Besterberg from the UPS box.
Of course we all know the tracklisting and we've all vented our quibbles with it, so it would be a little redundant for me to continue criticizing the matter. However I can't resist remarking once more how the inclusion of lesser tracks such as "Seein' Her" and "Angels Walk" made the cut while classics like "Born For Me", "These Are The Days", "Crackle & Drag" (ANY version) and "Waiting on Somebody" are unaccounted for. Oh well - at least we already have them on the original albums.
Onto the good parts. The packaging is very nice, boasting some great photos of PW. Even better is the fact that the liner notes boast mini-commentary by Paul on each song. And while they're not incredibly detailed, his personal remarks are often funny, irreverent and even touching. He even writes a bit towards the end about the missing songs that probably should have been included (though I don't agree w/any of his choices on the matter).
The sound also has a nice upgrade. While the latter tracks might not have needed it so much, there's a noticable sonic upgrade as tracks like "Dyslexic Heart" and "Knockin' On Mine" boast a fuller, more rocking sound.
All in all I am glad we have this collection. While far from perfect, the disc makes a fine start for a novice fan, not to mention the bonuses for us fans such as b-sides and unreleased tracks. And as another fan on this board said earlier, if buying this puts a few extra bucks in the pocket of our favorite songwriter then I am all for it.
