"Besterberg: The Best of Paul Westerberg" (Sire/Reprise/Rhino) Paul Westerberg will probably always be best known as the mouthpiece for the tragically underappreciated and commercially self-destructive rockers The Replacements. However, his solo output has been nearly as strong as his work with the 'Mats. "Besterberg" gathers 20 solo cuts, from his solo albums. Not exactly a true "best-of" collection, the disc combines prime cuts with soundtrack-only numbers and other rarities. Gems include the great power-pop number "Dyslexic Heart" (from the "Singles" soundtrack), "A Star Is Bored" (used in the TV show "Melrose Place") and some unused tracks originally recorded for the album "Eventually." Then there are some essentials, including "Knockin' on Mine," "It's a Wonderful Lie" (from the unfairly maligned Don Was-produced disc "Suicaine Gratification") and "High Time" (from probably Westerberg's best discs, "Mono" and "Stereo"). Longtime fans can rejoice in having all rare Westerberg in one place, while novices can get a hint at why he's so revered by rock enthusiasts. 1/2 Wayne Bledsoe may be reached at 865-342-6444 or bledsoe@knews.com. www.knoxnews.com/kns/entertainment_columnists/article/0,1406,KNS_360_3927418,00.html but you have to register I think the '1/2" at the end means either one out of two stars or 1/2 out of five stars. Call Wayne if you really wanna know.
