I saw Tommy open up for Jesse Malin over here on Thursday. It was cool. The sign outside the club read "Jesse Malin with Tommy Stinson ,Bass Player for Guns and Roses." I stood directly in front of Tommy, like two feet away, who was accompanied, for the most part, by the guitarist from Alien Crime Syndicate.
Tommy pllayed mostly tunes from VGH, which came across quite well at such a convenient distance. I too have heard the album and think it sounds a little too slick and over produced in places, but I think there are some real good songs there underneath it all. Tommy's voice was in fine form as well.
Tommy also played Some perfect tunes, Seven Days a Week, maybe another...Bash and Pop..Friday Night is Killim Me, First Steps was the closer. He also did a real nice note for note rendition of Big Star's Nighttime, which sounded exactly like the Sister Lovers version.
I guess there were about a hundred people in the club, about 30-40 were interested enough in Tommy to get up and surround the stage enthusiastically enough. There were probably 25 people there who knew Tommy's music. I met 6-8 guys who made up all of Denmark's Mats fans. A couple of guys had seen them in 91 over here. Tommy claimed from the stage that this was his first time in Copenhagen..
I got to talk a bit to Tommy after the show and listened to him answer questions from the 6-8 guys I mentioned.
He said that he had not seen Paul in about 7 years, said he had tried to work things out a many times over the years with Paul but that he had"really fucked himself" this time. Said he was supposed to do a GQ photoshoot with Paul about a month ago and Paul bailed at the last minute. He told this story again ttwo days later on Swedish radio.
Anyway, he signed my CD copy of Let it Be, and that Perfect was generally friendly to the 8 guys that came by to say hi then went backstage for Malin's set, who by the way, was quite lame.
