steve foley was an abominable live drummer. to this day i find it extremely hard to believe he is really the one playing drums on the bash and pop album. every time i saw him play live with the mats or bash and pop i was struck by his awfulness. here's the thing though, on those final replacements tours, having foley and slim in the band forced tommy and paul to really really step up their game, because they were the only ones capable of really executing the songs, and so we were lucky to witness a bunch of the most focused and vocally on target shows of the band's career.

i can't vote any of the above options, because none are accurate in my opinion.
bob didn't "make" the band, but he was important.
he certainly wasn't "wack".
there certainly IS a difference between "the two replacements"
one isn't "better" than the other.
the part about steve foley was good for a laugh, but that's about it.
i think the replacements were a hungrier, edgier band with mars & stinson. stinson both held the band back emotionally, and gave it the messy kick in the ass it needed at the time. without bob, the band got more focused, but not necessarily "better" & not really more "successful" either. ptmm & asd are definitely "solid" albums full of GREAT music, but by being more "solid" they are neccessarily less "unhinged". this is a double-edged sword. basically the replacements happened the way they were supposed to happen, and we got a great show, and transcendent music. i am just glad to be aware of the circus, and to have let it influence my life.

Without Bob they seemed more like the Paul Westerberg Band featuring Tommy Stinson(not a horrible thing, I'd pay to see that right now). PTMM was written with Bob in mind so it still sounds like the Replacements. DTAS and ASD? Except for Achin' to Be, I'll Be You and Merry Go Round I prefer solo PW from Mono on up to the present.
It was kind of like the Faces w/o Ronnie Lane or The Clash w/o Mick Jones or Guns and Roses w/o Duff and Slash...hey....

I really do love Bob's 0-100 in 1 second, close your eyes and floor it guitar. Westerberg always gave the songs an incredible structure but Bob gave em there edge. With Bob, the train was always teetering on going off the rails and it was damn exciting. And yeah, I like it when its juuusssssttttt abbbboooouuuuttt to go off the rails.
