And I can't believe that I am agreeing with Scooter on anything, because I never agree with Scooter about anything, and Kathy I am so surprised that you feel the way you do, I really am! But I get it, I do. And I get everybody's wanting to visit the good ol' days. I do to, TO A POINT. But having ALL of the top songs be from back in the day, I want to shake my ruler at all of you and say "Go listen to Folker again!" ...err....or CFMT, or well, you get it. You have to learn how to form an opinion! If I had to pick 10 songs to hear in this setting, my personal picks would be along the lines of: - Sadly Beautiful - Nobody - If Only You Were Lonely - Can't Hardly Wait - Nowhere is My Home - Meet Me Down The Alley - Black-Eyed Susan - My Daydream - Footsteps - What A Day (For A Night) Which is not to say those are my favorite songs or that I would pick the exact same songs tomorrow. But they are songs that I would love to hear in this setting. I picked them cause I love them but also because I'm interested in what Paul might say about them. I think my fundemental disagreement about having songs from the good old days on my list there is that if this were a regular PW show, say a PW & HOF show, at this point, no I wouldn't need to hear the old favorites again. In that context, I'd much rather hear some different, newer songs. But given this is a one-time thing with a different format, they make my list. And the only other thing I have to say is, isn't it nice to have a set list to argue over! In reality, Paul could pick 10 songs at random from a hat and I'd probably enjoy the show as much as if I picked them myself.

I, too, think Paul's solo stuff gets overlooked a lot by the long-time 'Mats fans, but I sometimes wonder if it's all just a matter of nostalgia - is it because they have fond youthful memories of those songs and that time in their lives? If it is, I totally understand it, 'cause I feel the same way about a lot of things, but the bottom line is Paul Westerberg wrote all of these songs we're talking about. All of 'em! That's what's truly amazing about all this, to me.
I'll put any of his solo songs up against the old 'Mats stuff and think they're equally brilliant, and they're all written by the same guy, so, if anything, it just proves how great a songwriter Paul's been for such a long period of time. In my opinion, there's been no drop-off or lull in his songwriting, which is truly remarkable.

thanks for the welcome randolph.
I agree with you that this show is about Paul as a songwriter. The ideal situation would be to hear him talk about how he started and where he is today using songs from the begining of his career to the present. I don't think it should be a show about reliving their frat boy past, but that is part of his past. I'd like to see it evenly balanced. I don't know who is voting on the poll and why it is balanced one way more than another. We all waited as mat's fans for him to go solo and now we get to enjoy a solo career that is greater than we ever could imagine.
I love his music today just as much as I did then. I think one of his greatest lyrics is "gave a life/ got a living/ hey that's alright/ all is forgiven". That's Paul's humble way of summing it all up in one line. I would love to hear him play "My Dad". The list goes on.

god, i couldn't agree more with areg. i have been waiting for someone else to bring up gunshy. there is so much imagery in that one, and i would lovelovelove to hear about it.
nevermind, i wasn't trying to climb down your throat or anything. i was just shocked by what the poll results told me. it is very clear. the interesting thing is that the few people on who have posted on this thread have all espoused the idea that "his news stuff is on par with his old stuff".
why the results on the poll, then? this is a bigger question than this thread can allow, i feel. kathy, give me the names & email addresses of everyone who took the poll, please.
i have urgent business with about 400 westernerds.

it's all good scooter. I never trusted polls anyway.
I'm sure Paul will play whatever he feels like. Have you ever known Paul to stick to a plan? He loves his fans and he never disappoints.
Right now, I wouldn't care what he played, I would just love to see him play live.

god, i couldn't agree more with areg. i have been waiting for someone else to bring up gunshy. there is so much imagery in that one, and i would lovelovelove to hear about it. agree, agree, agree! if for no other reason than to find out if he knew anyone who's peed on Ajax! again, I think some of you are reading WAY too much into this poll and are unnecessarily getting all worked up. Putting it a different way that my earlier post, let's try this. If you pulled 100 people from this board aside and asked them "is Can't Hardly Wait a great song that you'd like to hear more about"*** you'd pretty much get 100 yes votes or something very close. We all love that song, and as someone put it earlier, hearing the backstory about ANY song from Paul would be cool. But if you ask the same question about pretty much any of the recent songs (especially the past 4 albums) - "Only Lie Worth Telling" or "OD Blues" or "Crackle & Drag" or the like - the number would be clearly less. Is that because those songs are inferior to the others? No, not necessarily - it's just that you'll have some folks who might not have bought S/M or DMS or CFMT (yes, even in a gaggle of Westernerds like we have here there will be some!), as well as some folks who might be turned off, for example, by the "sloppy blues" playing in DMS or the DIY production quality of those last 4 albums. *** Note that I completely agree with what was said earlier that most people answered this poll "incorrectly" and just voted for their favorite tunes. anyway, that's the best I can put it. I think it's just the nature of the poll - remember, there are 400 or so voters taking the poll, but only a couple dozen or so people who post here frequently.

I got to throw my two cents in here. To me at least, Paul's solo career has veered more toward ballads, albeit some of the most brilliant ballads ever written. Personally though, I was introduced to Westy via straight up, full tilt rock songs. There was power blowin out of those speakers and at the time we were being fed some of the worst ( think Kansas, Journey, Nugent) crap ever put on vinyl. As a result, Westy helped Rock and Roll survive through its darkest hour. For that alone, I will forever be indebted. I think the split we're seeing in the poll results is more a reaction to which type songs you like more. If you're in to more loud obnoxious rock, you're probably going to favor some of the older stuff. If your into really soul searching insightful ballads, you're going to lean to the more recent material.
JUst my two cents.

timsch, are you inferring I'm soft, you SOB?
Just kidding y'all, and sorry Nevermind (if that's your real name) if the frat boy comment rubbed you the wrong way. You will find many comments will rub you the wrong way here, and only about a third will come from me.
I'm sticking with the idea that some fans are still mired in nostalgialand, wearing flannel shirts and falling asleep on the floor with their whiskey bottles.
