Check out You Am I. Their tour has just kicked off. I know they've been discussed on this board before (as a possible backing band to PW) but the new disc "Convicts" is great - Sloppy and Rockin!! www.youami.net/tour.htm

The song "By My Own Hand" is the best reworking of "Nowhere is My Home" I've heard yet.
It's on You Am I's latest CD, Convicts.
And "I'm a Mess" off the same CD sounds a bit like Love You in the Fall.

you know? i have their album from a few years back called "sound as ever", and i really don't like it all that much. i listened to the amazon samples for their new one, "convicts", and i am shocked by how much better it sounds to me than the earlier album i own. perhaps i should give them another shot.

"sound as ever" may be a victim of its time. i think it came out in the early 19grungies, and it shows... or sounds on the album. there is a baaaaad guitar fx pedal used throughout the album. one that makes the guitars sound "heavy". the new one just sounds more honest in its approach. i like the samples i have heard a lot.

I got into them solely due to the rumors that they were going to be PW's backing band. Someone on a Wilco board sent me their 1996 album Hourly Daily and I was really sold. It's their best, I think, but that's cause it's Beatlesy and I dig that. They're probably actually Stonsier on their most recent records. Or Matsier. There's that quote from Tim Rogers the bandleader that he never knows which Paul he wants to be: Stanley, Weller, or Westerberg.

I just called the 400 Bar and found out You Am I is not the headliner. They go on at 9:30 p.m. and play for only 45 minutes. Then the Smoking Popes go on at 10:30 p.m. Someone else goes on earlier at 8:30 p.m.
Man.

er ... I So Wasn't There. Had to meet a plane that ended up coming in late and they had just left the stage when I got to the 400 Bar. Anyone else make it? My pals who got there on their own seemed to like You Am I live a lot, although one guy said he could do without the stage posing and in fact closed his eyes so he could enjoy the musicianship better. Not unlike this blogger comment after another opening slot at the same MPLS bar last March (!): "You Am I were very garage and very British and they kicked the jams out. First I’ve heard them, but I’d recommend them. Maybe a shade or two too rock-out-with-your-cock-out for many in the stateside self-deprecation indie rock scene, but in this live setting they were much fun."

Looking forward to the Detroit show tonight but I was disappointed to learn You Am I Aren't headlining. I love the Convicts record and hope to pick up an earlier release at the show. (for the record they're Australian, not British).
Haven't heard much of the Smoking Popes but the friend I am going with loves them.

You am I was brilliant on Detroit last night. They came out with what to me is the most mats-like tune from their record and really tore it up for a short 35/40 minute set. Very high energy, great guitar tones and playing. The small crowd didn't get their aussie humor...
Anyhow - having never seen them before and only knowing their latest record, I have to say they are the best new (to me) band i've seen in some time. Higly recommended to any fans of 84-87 era mats.

Kicking myself for missing them twice this year in MPLS (didn't know about the March show). Here's what a fan in Chicago reported on the You Am I forum: On the topic of Mr. Rogers, what a great guy. I talked to him a couple of times before and after his set. He was very approachable and friendly. He mentioned that it is very expensive to tour in the US and does not know when they will or ever be back. I stated that I was looking forward to hearing him play and he said " This ain't play, we are working".
So get out there if you're within going-out distance of any of their remaining East Coast-West Coast shows.

been a long time paul fan but i've gotta say that tim rogers has been parallel to that of paul for years now. the man is amazing. gets better and better; the licks, the voice, the lyrics. he's still banging out rockers and heartbreakers. listen to 'you absolutely charming man' off his latest or 'dinosaurs' then 'the sweet life' or 'get up' and you'll get it (or should).

it's funny and cool reading you guys gushing over one of our best. if you want to hear definitive you am i (imo), i suggest hi-fi way, record no.4 and the much maligned deliverance. the mats connection is obvious and tim rogers makes no secret of it.

Man, I just bought convicts after hearing so much about these guys in this threat. It's great! I can hear the Matsiness of it, but it's not a total blaring rip-off. (Until the song "I'm A Mess" hits. It's a Paul Westerberg song disguised as a You Am I tune. Honestly...)

The song "By My Own Hand" is the best reworking of "Nowhere is My Home" I've heard yet. It's on You Am I's latest CD, Convicts. And "I'm a Mess" off the same CD sounds a bit like Love You in the Fall. "Down Love" is more what You Am I's song "By My Own Hand" sounds like. In fact, Down Love is sort of a template for the sound You Am I has settled into in their old age.
