From the State Fair blog Myprontopup.com: Sweet! I've been waiting anxiously for the final State Fair Grandstand announcements for a some time now, and the roster has slowly been filling in. It's always bittersweet, because I know they can't line up my favorite artists -- they'd lose a bundle. Still, each year I wait and just hope they'll throw me a bone with at least ONE act I can really get excited about. And this year's line-up is proving to be pretty decent (in a State Fairish kind of way). Most notably (for me anyway) is Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. I love Joan. Just a few weeks ago I saw a documentary on The Runaways (which Joan smartly didn't participate in), and let's face it, she rocks. And, in wishful yet highly unprobable thinking, I'm secretly hoping that Joan calls up Paul Westerberg to join her for a couple of songs. It's not entirely far-fetched. You see, they did a great Cole Porter inspired duet called "Let's Do It" for the Tank Girl soundtrack (good luck finding it, although I have it)... And Westerberg contributed to her 90's album Notorious... And, Joan covers the 'Mat's song Androgynous on her latest album. So... Well, I'm just dreaming it, but somebody needs to get these two back on stage together. If only for me.

circa 1987 ptmm tour after seeing the mats play after fishbone, royal crescent mob in chicago at the riv...NOTE: only 3 bands played, paul at his best..if someone pays to see def leopard, styx, they are completely retarded, those bands suck ass, and i'll stand on anyone's grave, who's in charge and scream it!!!!...opinions got out the window on those two bands...bad bad bad...

I hear you. I always thought Def Leppard was one of the shittiest bands of all time [and this is from someone who sorta likes cheeseball bands like Foreigner, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, the Scorpions etc.].

I just heard who the special guests TBA are for the Joan Jett show ... Fountains of Wayne and seminal MPLS punk band the Suicide Commandos.



One night in the fall of '77, the Minnetonka Fire Department burned down the condemned Utopia House--the legendary Commandos HQ that the band had rented for $30 a month. Knowing it would happen, the band wrote one of its finest anthems for the occasion--"Burn It Down"--shooting a video for the song with the flaming house as a live backdrop. (I believe this is an early video by Chuck Statler who went on to do lots of the well-known videos by Devo, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe among others)

Joanie may love Chachi, but she certainly doesn't love me. Joan Jett's state fair show is cancelled. The only bright spot is that the Suicide Commandos and Fountains of Wayne will still be playing the Grandstand... for free. I got to have dinner to the Commando's drummer last week, so I'm still pumped for their show. They were slated to do a short 25-minute set, but now hopefully we'll get to see an expanded show.

So, my dreams of a Westerberg/Jett reunion are dashed. But, there will be a Replacement's connection. The daughter of one of the Commandos is singing backup, along with... Tommy Stinson's daughter.
