Ok, I give up. Who thinks this is about them, and in what video are they wearing the same coat as Paul?

I agree. Can someone let me in on this, I've just about given up trying to guess the person...

The mystery person is the man who shared a silent elevator ride with Paul. Hint: He was "dyin' to be dyin." Check out the Heart Shaped Box video on You Tube to see the jacket.
There's no way to know if he thought the song was about him but he's definitely wearing a similar jacket.

Oh man... I was thinking along the lines of Tom Petty. I'll have to watch that video now.

Didn't Paul say it was about him and that's why he's playing guitar in the mirror in the video? Also, I seem to recall Paul saying in interviews that it's about him as well as Tommy wanting to become bigger - or something other - than what they already were.
I don't think Paul cared much for Kurt Cobain, and by that I just don't think he gave Nirvana and all of that much thought.

Yeah, I remember Paul saying something about he was thinking of Tommy when he moved out to LA or something. I don't recall Paul explicitly saying if it was about anyone in particular, just the whole idea of stardom and fame.
And on Nirvana, I remember Paul saying that he thought the band had "too much plod".

In the liner notes of Besterberg he said that someone famous thought the song was about him.
Personally, I think the song is autobiographical. World class fad is classic Paul self-deprecation.
But it is fun and intriguing to think the song is about Cobain. I think Paul is keenly aware of his myth and place in rock history. By linking himself with Cobain, he generates a lot of interest in the song and himself. It's a brilliant marketing move that gets people talking on message boards!
Plus there's no way to argue that they are wearing similar jackets. It's all pretty cool, I think.

I was reading something last night where Paul said, when asked if World Class Fad is about Cobain: "I don't have enough respect for the guy to write a song about him."
I still think it's autobiographical.

I thought it was Courtne Love who thought the song was about Cobain, and not Cobain himself. But I agree that Paul wrote it more about himself.

Paul and Kurt always reminded me of each other in an odd way. both are true artists, pioneers, still spit out a pop songs with integrity and stayed true to their art. i certainly don't have a clue how they got along but their careers were at a high so they were probaly both pricks.

His own cousin thinks that he's a jerk. i know this because my family bought a dog from her.

Yeah, but I don't think he cares too much. His nickname for HIMSELF is 'Little Bastard.'
