"Bad Worker" doesn't get mentioned very often. I guess that makes it obscure. Technically it's a Replacements song, but I don't think anyone besides Paul was in the room when it was recorded. I've always considered this one, "Hard to Wave in Handcuffs," and "Don't Get Married" a trilogy. I'm not even sure whether they're even outtakes from the same era, but they sound like it to me. I actually had the chance to ask Paul about Don't Get Married on the Folker tour. Turns out in real life she did get married and later divorced. God that was a great night........

There are songs that are obscure just because they ended up on soundtracks and foreign versions of his official releases (Wonderful Copenhagen, Be Bad for Me, 33rd of July), but I think the most obscure are the songs that he mentions in interviews that were recorded, but never released. Pleasure Of Your Company, Thoroughbred, King Of America, Cheyenne( listen to a short clip HERE). He also mentioned C'mon Little Bitch, but that ended up on Besterberg, so maybe there's hope that these other songs will surface someday, also. hey, do you know where i can get full lengths of those songs? i really liked the clip!

I certainly think "Don't Get Married" is the coolest of all the unreleased stuff I've heard. I'd love to hear the "Handcuffs" song. But it's only legend as far as I know. Anyone ever hear "Hard To Wave in Handcuffs"?

It's Hard To Wave In Handcuffs Wow ... that song puts tally marks in a lot of lists: - piano stylings of PW (someone probably tallied that already) - mentions of famous people (Bruce Springsteen, Otis Redding) - mentions of Cadillacs - songs with the F-word

Thankyou Blast. That's a strange Westerberg song. Paul doesn't seem to sing from the point of view of a character often, I usually assume he's speaking for himself, doubtful that's the case here. And I'd always figured it was about getting arrested for some adolescent reason (and that it might be a bit Autobiographic) . Another mystery put to rest.

What era is that song from? It's listed as a demo from 1980-82. Kinda sounds like something he recorded in his parent's basement.

speaking of "hard to wave in handcuffs", i am pretty sure songs like "hey kid" & "promise you nothing" are from the same era/home session. of those other two, i would LOVE to hear "promise you nothing" recorded today as solo paul. i think it is also known as "cool your jets". the version i am listening to right now would actually work on cfmt or mono, i think.

There's a whole collection of songs that were recorded about this time. I always assumed that they were recorded in his home on a cheap recorder, as most of them are pretty hissy, and of pretty bad quality. He also has a coughing fit during some of the songs. He'd probably be pretty embarrassed to hear these today. Some of them sound like the bad imitators that you sometimes see on Youtube.

Yeah, I don't disagree with you, Scooter. My point is about the sound quality, not so much the songs themselves. There are a couple of early versions of songs that were later professionally recorded that sound pretty rough on this cd, but turned out to be really good. Now that I listen to "Cool My Jets" again, it does sound like something they should have taken into the studio. Pretty catchy.

What about the "Months" song (s-e-p-t-e-m-b-e-r) that PW did the first night at the Pantages in MPLS? I've never heard it, or even OF it, since.

It sort of reminds me of love you in the fall, lyrically....about moving onto someone new as the seasons change. Maybe it will show up with Everything Goes Wrong on the PW box set?
