i was (pleasantly) surprised to hear should i stay or shoud i go in a Open Season commercial this afternoon. i don't think Paul has any creative control over the other songs in the movie but its always perplexed me why Paul prefered the pistols over the clash.

Paul doesn't seem to like didactic, political rock; neither do I. Somewhere on this message board are some excerpts from interviews where he talks about how he had no use for Sandinista!

Strummer wasn't a big fan of The Mats, either, apparently, so I guess the feeling was mutual. Oh, well... Regardless, I love 'em both!

Actually, the Strummer interviewer reported only that Strummer "wasn't a fan"...which is entirely different from not liking them. It's possible that Joe just wasn't familiar with the Mats.

yea, very weird indeed. just listen to "clampdown" for example, that tune alone sounds like THE proto-mats song.

I recall an interview where PW said he bought a Clash record (London Calling?) and took it back the same day. PW said Strummer couldn't sing worth a damn.

"After this we discussed reggae, Latin music, the Replacements (he wasn't a fan) ..." —Anthony Roman, lead singer for Radio 4, on a conversation with Joe Strummer, maybe around 1990, in the book "Let Fury Have the Hour: The Punk Rock Politics of Joe Strummer"
"Maybe their best. My younger sister was realy into them and I would listen to London Calling through her bedroom wall. I went to see them on a triple bill with David Johansen and The Undertones. The sound was awful but they came on and it was probably the perfect thing I needed to see. It was before i was in The Replacements and was still listening to hippie music. I went to see them and everything changed overnight. I was right up front in a big crush of people. I liked the aggression of their music but I didn't give a damn what they were talking about because it didn't relate to my life and by Sandinista! I had no use for any of that crap. But I thought they looked very cool and they were a very capable rock band, more than they were a punk band." —Paul Westerberg, on the song "London Calling," in an all-star poll of rock n roll people on the Clash's 30 best songs, in the Dec. 2003 issue of Uncut

kgp must know where this comes from, but I'm pretty sure it was not London Calling but the first "The Clash" LP that PW said he returned to the store. Presumably the US release, which of course was actually released here after the second Clash LP and had a different mix of songs then did the UK version of "The Clash". Maybe PW would have kept it if it had "Protex Blue."
