the go-go's wrote some of the most memorable songs of a decade. i'm not sure if they belong on that list, but i will always defend the honor of my wife, jane weidlin. Good for you, Scooterboy! I saw the Go-Go's, in their early days, at a theatre on Market St. in San Francisco and they were GREAT! They were tight, driven, and energetic- not to mention a hell of a lot of fun. That was a great night! Ah memories... The Go-Gos I caught on the tour they did with Marshall Crenshaw... I assume he opened for them, but my memory if foggy..must have been their later days. CF

Though Westerberg is my undisputed favorite (, followed by Dylan, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson and many others,) they omitted Rakim of Eric B & Rakim fame. He (laugh now if needed) is on a par with 90% of the folks on that list.

Just got the new issue. Paul's at #40 on the Reader's Top 100 and #52 on the "official" poll of 50 music critics and musicians.

May we take credit for having, um, elevated him?

It is a pretty comprehensive list - my glaring omission is Kim Shattuck of The Muffs. I'd also say the Go-Go's should be in there - maybe none of them individually, but as a band their songwriting has been uniformly excellent. Man, the Muffs rock! I saw them open for the Goo Goo Dolls in Boston probably around 1993 or so, and they absolutely blew them off the stage.

I saw them open for the Goo Goo Dolls in Boston probably around 1993 or so, and they absolutely blew them off the stage. I got Blonder And Blonder when it came out back in the mid-90's and liked it a lot, but I wasn't focusing on music quite so much back in those pre-Internet days when I was still racing. I rediscovered The Muffs around the time they released Really Really Happy in 2004. There are actually quite a few similarities between Kim and Paul - they're both iconoclastic personalities and prolific songwriters who brushed up against fame and then pulled back into the indie world. They even have similar recording tendencies - the sound on Really Really Happy is fairly sparse because it was mostly recorded in Kim's kitchen...
