Paste magazine is doing a poll of the 100 great living songwriters. Go to www.pastemagazine.com and you can vote for Paul. You're allowed to vote for 20 from a long and pretty damn coherent list. Although you may notice there is one glaring omission: No Nick Lowe. Add him in as a write-in if you feel so inclined. (Please.)

It is a pretty comprehensive list - my glaring omission is Kim Shattuck of The Muffs.
I'd also say the Go-Go's should be in there - maybe none of them individually, but as a band their songwriting has been uniformly excellent.

Looks like you can vote for whoever you want, via the "other" catagory.. CF

tough list. i voted for Paul but there are some great songwriters out there. Paul Simon, jackson Browne, elvis Costello,Paul Mcartney, mick, keith, Bob Dylan even eminem has lyrical talent although i can't stand the dude. Aimee Mann is another contender. Don Henley writes great songs. i could go on and on and on...............................

It would be hard to pick one out, nice they gave you 20 choices.
But they are missing David Berman of the Silver Jews, my current fave.

I'd also say the Go-Go's should be in there ?????????????????? Kathy Valentine, Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey are all first-rate songwriters, and Gina Schock has also participated significantly. Like I said, none of them have done enough individually to be on the list, but as a band they stack up extremely well against a large number of people nominated - Beck, Bjork, Beastie Boys and Ben Gibbard, just to take a few from one screen.

Why do they include Morrissey, but no Johnny Marr? From what I understand Marr wrote the Music and Morrissey the lyrics for the Smiths. They included a lot of song-writing teams, so why not list these two as a team, or at least list Johnny Marr individually.

I saw the Go-Go's, in their early days, at a theatre on Market St. in San Francisco and they were GREAT! They were tight, driven, and energetic- not to mention a hell of a lot of fun. That was a great night!
