Well, that's just the problem with determining a 'best drummer', Wolfdog. I mean, there are so many different styles and genres, that you can't really point out one single drummer as the best.

For Rock I gotta go with MR. BUN E. CARLOS, wicked as Keith Moon but understood what the individual song needed a bit more. Also, Motown, I do not know the song-by-song listing, but the Funk Bros. - several drummers - with Mr. James Jamerson (greatest ever) on bass were the best r&r rythmn section ever. And yes, nice to see Ringo get some well-deserved props, just listen to "She said, She said" for how psychadelic jazz drumming in a pop song can be.
Above all, I'll take Elvin Jones of the classic John Coltrane quartet over any of 'em.
Christopher Mars? The best drummer they could find at the time.

They may not be the best, but I'd rather hear Ringo and Charlie than the others mentioned. Honorable mentions go to Michael B in Austin a couple of years ago and Josh Freese looking like Johnny Rotten on SNL in '93.

I think Neil Peart is a top-notch drummer, and exactly what Rush needs, but I don't think he would add anything to As Far As I Know. here here! i love rush (for anyone who didn't know it), and this comment is dead on the nuts. peart is great at what he does in rush, but i much prefer listening to: janet weiss (the drumming in "get up" is almost backward) gina shock buddy rich ebony rhythm budda blakehopkins edit: yesyesyes to mr. bun e., too.
