That's what Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner says about Michael Bland, who has turned down the Dixie Chicks and John Mayer to work with hometown heroes. Thought I'd post this for you all: www.startribune.com/457/story/356074.html

That was a nice article. I thought the Madonna bit about MB being over-qualified was interesting as PW once said something similar before Folker came out when asked if MB might be playing on Folker...to the affect that his drumming would be too good for some of those Folker tracks....probably the same ones that many complained about PW doing his own drumming. Its interesting that one might be TOO skilled for some tracks and types of music.
Also good to see the point that sometimes you might make a decision based on the music and band instead of the paycheck.....

Janet Weiss (sleater-kinney), anyone?
seriously. listen to dig me out or the woods on good headphones. her drumming will blow yr mind. better than john bonham or keith moon or any of those man-band drummers. for real.
i also like dave grohl's drumming a lot. for example, the only queens... album i've liked is songs for the deaf, and mostly because his drumming really pulled that band into the fast lane(? or some such trite/cliched figure of speech). and then, of course, there's nirvana.

I read an interview with Grohl somewhere in which he says that Cobain supposedly wanted to fire him. A bit of a bizarre thought, given how acclaimed Grohl's drumming is (then again, that might've been what made Kurt think of it). Kurt was the man behind Nirvana, but Grohl was definitely the hero of that band. The Bob Stinson to Cobain's Westerberg if you will.
