I have heard all about how Husker Du and the Replacements were the best bands to come out of MPLS . I heard how Husker Du influenced the Mats . I bought Zen Arcade and I don't hear it . They don't come close to PW.

it was more of a competitive influence going on, not so much of a sound comparison. they are quite different. at their mutual heights, they were both amazing freakin bands. i do recall bob mould saying in a recent interview that on average husker du were better because they always put on a good show, were as the mats had their notorious ability to throw a wreck in things and put up a dog of a show. but he said, at their best the mats were better, which i thought was quite telling, because bob can be a bit unrelenting when his ego takes hold. ad am

right. i just read something once again about how sorry ma, and stink are basically hd albums.
bollocks. total bollocks.
as stated, the bands were playing off of one another creatively, and they may both have been drawing from the "punk" well at first, but then you might as well say x & minor threat are the same bands.

In another interview, Bob put it as saying that Husker Du were a well oiled machine in the sense that they would bang out one song after another, barely giving anyone (the audience or the band) time to catch their breath, whereas the Mats sarcaficed that sort of intensity for the sake of anarchy. Two different bands, two different personalities. But, like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, just because you like one, it doesn't mean you'll like the other.
Sonically, Husker Du didn't influence the Replacements very much at all, regardless of whatever the AllMusicGuide will tell you. Soul Asylum, on the other hand, was very much influenced by both bands in nearly equal measure.

Sorry Ma sounds hardly anything like Husker Du. Stink, there may be a case for because of its metalish aspects, but even then the subject matter and the general playing style of both bands is extremely different.

I kind of came to both bands at the same time so they share a common hold on my heart (tho the Mats have the edge). The Huskers were alot more abrasive than the Mats - and, as a result, can be less instantaneous. But they fill the same emotional hole for me at the end of the day. Every Mats record I bought had me going 'Oh My God, these guys know me!' just about first time and the Huskers had the same effect on me. Their careers followed similar trajectories too. Both signed major label deals around the same time and both effectively split around the same time (tho the Mats maintained the semblance of togetherness for an additional three years). Tommy is to Paul what grant hart is to Bob I think. At least Paul never went disco.

At least Paul never went disco. "A Few Minutes of Silence", maybe?

At least Paul never went disco. "Asking Me Lies" is a sorta lite-funk workout.

I'd heard so much about how the two bands were similar that I tried listening to Husker Du once a few years ago. I thought I liked it. About 2 months later, I realized I didn't. I don't mean to say they're bad, of course; I just don't like them.
And I don't hear the 'Mats resemblance, either. The two bands might've come from the same place at the same time (and they probably share much of their fan base), but, sonically, they're quite different.
