So I was at the gym when the very well produced piece of sappy, WB teeny-bopper drivel "One Tree Hill" came on the air. I was more or less about to head home when I noticed one character (named Peyton and apparently very music obsessed from what little I gathered) speaking to another character about her favorite song. When she asked the other character what her favorite song was the woman replied "Here Comes a Regular by the Replacements."
She then proceeded to tell a very seemingly ficitional account of attending an outdoor festival in the 80's in Winston Salem, NC in which a horrible storm broke out. When the storm finally settled, after several hours and the loss of power, a lone Paul Westerberg emerged on the stage with only an acoustic guitar to sing "Regular" to the 30,000 fans who decided to ride out the storm. The character said that in typical fashion "he finished the song, smiled...and then threw up and fell off the stage."
I decided to finish the episode out just to see if the song would get played, and sure enough at the end of the show, when the woman who told the story was apparently succumbing to terminal cancer (remember I did say it was sappy drivel) they played almost the entire song over a montage of images.
I thought this was pretty cool name drop considering what little respect classic indie rock and its pioneers get on TV shows aimed at today's 13 to 25 year old demographic. One Tree Hill may have just went up a notch in my book...well...maybe just a little one. Ha, Ha!!

i've never watched a second of the show, but i do know that they have featured a matthew ryan song before, so there is obviously a (good) music lover involved somewhere over there.

Didn't Paul say 'Here Comes a Regular' was totally off-limits when asked about using songs in movies and on television?

Didn't Paul say 'Here Comes a Regular' was totally off-limits when asked about using songs in movies and on television? Yep, back in 2002 ... punchlinemag.com/ContentDisplay.php4?UID=446Your song "Waiting for Somebody" is being used for an Amazon.com commercial now and -- I authorized that. I asked Cameron Crowe's permission because I wrote the song for his movie [Singles]. He's one of the greatest, most intelligent, funny guys you'd ever want to meet, and he said "whatever man, if it gets you to a larger audience or make you a little bread, that's fine with me." I was going to say that a lot of people get offended by stuff like that, but what business do they have dictating what you do with your art? It is my song, I needed the money. But I'll give you a perfect example because yesterday I had a request for "Here Comes a Regular" for a television show and I immediately declined. I had to tell the people that there are some songs that are off limits completely. Songs that can't be used to sell or whatever and I think "Alex Chilton" would be another one.

I hope that doesn't mean we'll be hearing 'Hear Comes a Regular' in an Ex-Lax commercial anytime soon (especially since 'Making Me Go' would sound so much better).

The way the show referenced the song and the moment in which the character described Paul singing it seemed far more like a tribute to the Mats and the connection Paul's music has made with people. Each character also dropped Paul's name about 4 times in the 2 minute exchange, so it seemed like they really wanted someone to pay attention.
I have to agree with sCoOtEr on this one and guess that the show's music supervisor (who is Lindsay Wolfington) or even one of the writers is just a huge fan of Paul's and wanted to include their thoughts and feelings about how much he means to them. It probably doesn't hurt that Warner Bros has full access to the Mats' latter period catalog and were just dying to unload these tunes on someone willing to place them on a semi-popular teen melodrama.
...and really the whole thing doesn't seem all that different than the use of Waiting for Somebody to me. Paul said he made more money from the Nowhere Man cover in I am Sam than he did on the total Mats' catalog over the years. At this point the name check is just good advertising. This isn't the first time either...I remember reading that Whatever Makes you Happy was featured on an episode of Dawson's Creek.

Didn't Paul say 'Here Comes a Regular' was totally off-limits when asked about using songs in movies and on television? Maybe since it was being used to accompany a story rather than for just a commercial... I would guess the emotional ties a writer has to some songs might fade as they outgrow the situations the material pertains to (to put it another way - maybe he just doesn't give a crap anymore)

And then hopefully some would investigate him further.

Well, really it's Paul's intellectual property to do with whatever he sees fit to do. But I can't see him allowing any of his songs to be debased in some way where the dignity of the song is really stripped away. Here Comes a Regular seems to fit in perfectly within its context of the TV show and I guess Paul didn't have any heartburn about that. And good for him! I'm glad he got name checked.....maybe it'll get some teeny bopper interested in that song leading him or her to discover Paul and the Mats.

For those of you on the West Coast, this one is repeating tonight so look out for the Westerberg reference. For those of us on the East Coast, the show is half over and the reference has already been made, but we still have a few minutes until "Regular" plays in the final scene.

Sorry to ressurrect a thread about One Tree hill, but i have found myself pretty surprised by this show. My wife was given the first two seasons of it and we're hooked on it (but that's beside the point). The show makes you rewind it every once in a while to look at a sticker or poster in the background. I've seen some pretty funny stuff. I wonder if the cast is into this stuff or just somebody behind the scenes. I've seen posters from Lawrence Arms, Against Me!, Atmosphere, CombatWoundedVeteran (FLA Grindcore), and more. It's strange. One episode had a little convo about Descendents Milo goes to college and now Westerberg? Sheesh. I love this fucking show.

Just thought I'd let you guys know the "Here Comes a Regular" episode of OTH repeats this Wednesday @ 9pm (EST) on the WB. Probably your last chance to see it before the new season begins. Gotta love a good Paul reference, regardless of where it's coming from...

I think the song fit perfectly with what was going on. I cringed when i heard the news, but it actually made the scene much more effective.
