Well there's the obvious, The CC Club on Lyndale and 26th. Here Comes A Regular inspired by this joint, also mentioned in Mr. Whirly, and parts of the Achin' To Be video is shot there. Also check out The Uptown Bar, Tommy usually plays there when he's in town, his mom used to work there. Plus there's bands. I would of course say hit the 7th St. Entry. Coolest place in Mpls hands down. Someone else was telling me to suggest the 400 Bar. Owned by Bill Sullivan. I'm not a big fan of the place, expensive and not the best sight lines when checking out a band. All of the NE Mpls is dive bars. I would suggest Grumpy's NE on 22nd and University, great jukebox. Even has Folker on it. What day are you coming to town?

ok I could have stopped but I'll mention something else. The CC Club is about 4 blocks from the Let It Be house. Across the street from the CC Club is Treehouse Records formerly Oarfolk, which is a great record store and they have some cool Mats posters.
The Uptown Bar is not far from the CC and both are close to Bob's Bench.

Ah a mile? Which hotel? The Entry is a must see. Is Tuesday night the night you'd head out? I can check for any shows

it's not really 'mats related, but i always have out of towners check out the sculpture garden at the walker art center. i really love the place.
and if you are getting in on tuesday, that means the conservatory will be open there, so you can see the "city" in the floor tile, and the big glass fish.

treehouse/oarfolk ... isn't that where Bob would sit around reading rock books, and is that where Paul brought their first demo tape in?

Yes, that's the infamous store.
The CC Club is one of my favorite dive bars in all of America...but it's become sort of annoying at night. Once the working class heroes stumble home, they're replaced by trendy normals who have no idea of the history of the bar. My suggestion is to hit the place in the late afternoon. They also have a great jukebox, a mix of classics, current stuff, and local albums. Years ago, I discovered that if you plug in the unlisted bonus track of a certain Supersuckers album you could listen to the entire album for the cost of one play. Too bad it's not on there anymore.

I have to agree with the CC becoming way too trendy. And the new condos coming on Lyndale aren't going to help that at all. I actually haven't been there in a couple of months for this reason. Still a good crowd at breakfast though the food really isn't much to rave about. You should definitely still check it out.

I'm partial to the Hexagon in south Minneapolis. Live music usually without a cover and the clientele is an odd mix of blue collar types and trendy scenesters. The only 'Mats connection I can think of though is that it's close to the site of the late Duffy's, where the 'Mats often played in the early '80s.
