"I'm Dave Letterman and here's tonight's Top Ten list:
Top Ten Reasons Paul Westerberg Never Hit it Big With the General Public
Number Ten: Overexposure and his constant pandering to the media rubbed people the wrong way.
Number Nine: Failed to change name to 'Easterberg' and get CD's to the front racks.
Number Eight: The time he put that goofy cap on my head? I cursed him.
Number Seven: Decision to use neither the words 'doll' or 'goo' in band's name haunted him forever.
Number Six: Two words: Spraypainted Suits
Number Five: Insisting on never traveling far without a little Big Star can cramp your touring schedule.
Number Four: His songwriting skills never rose to the subtle heights of one Jon Bon Jovi.
Number Three: Turned down Brian Setzer's offer for co-headlining "Mats and Cats" reunion tour.
Number Two: Freakishly obsessive fans scared him into his basement for three years straight.
And the Number One Reason Paul Westerberg Never Hit Big With the General Public:They aint too bright!
And that's your Top Ten list. Next up, the lovely Salma Hayek . . .

Number eleven: Refusing to shorten last name to Dylan, to help reduce the number of syllables in last name, ensures the young uns won't remember his name.
Number twelve: Was tired of being around...what do you call it...uh...people!

Number Three: Turned down Brian Seltzer's offer for co-headlining "Mats and Cats" reunion tour. You had me going until "Seltzer." It's Setzer. Seltzer's what you get down your pants.

Duly noted.
(Does that mean I score nine out of ten?)

that list was pure class. FOR A BRIEF, FLEETING MOMENT, i was thinking "is letterman a closet paul fan?"

Seltzer's what you get down your pants. I've never had Seltzer down MY pants, but it sure sounds interesting..maybe new year's eve night? And the list IS funny, especially the hat line.

Duly noted. (Does that mean I score nine out of ten?) 10 for 10, baby. More power to you. I had to keep reminding myself it weren't true. You got Letterman's style down pat, only the obscurity of the references gives it away (starting with the obscurity of the topic of Paul Westerberg).

that list was pure class. FOR A BRIEF, FLEETING MOMENT, i was thinking "is letterman a closet paul fan?" Letterman is a Paul fan. Or at least somebody in charge of music on the show is. Replacements tunes are always popping up as filler music during their Biff Henderson segments. I just heard Buck Hill on the show a few months ago, and last year I remember hearing When It Began and Kiss Me On The Bus used just a few shows apart. Dave's comments during Paul's appearances have implied that he's a fan too. He doesn't always praise the musical guests the way he praises Paul, Foo Fighters, Iggy Pop, Warren Zevon and Tom Waits. Those seem to be Dave's favorites.
