This is my first thread that I have started here so I figured I might as well make it interesting.. Well, at least I hope it is.
I spent this evening re-listening to Chris Mars' "Tenterhooks" & "Horseshoes and Hand-grenades" this evening.
I don't know if I am the only one here but this guy is quite fun to listen to. Some very cool arrangements and lyrics. Back when I was in highschool I wrote Chris a couple of letters..he always responded and always seemed like a really cool guy.
I don't know, as time wore on I have shelved some of his offerings for quite awhile... Now I am glad I gave them another listen. What do you all think..any favorites?

I'm ashamed to say that I've seen Horseshoes at my local used record store for something like $8 and have continually passed it over. I'm thinking now I might actually pick it up.
It's bound to better than everything else.

I still sing the lyrics to "Get Out of My Life" to myself pretty frequently. It's one of those songs that just sticks in your head.
I remember hearing that first record and being so surprised by how much Chris had going on. I wonder what the Mats would have been like if he had been able to contribute more of his material...

you two. quick, get into "avatar thunderdome". you can't both use that! Two avatars enter, one avatar leave! & Yes, Scooter runs Barter Town. I was also surprised by my first listen to 75% Less Fat. Good record. Don't listen to it much, but then I haven't traded it in.

I was just reading some customer reviews on Horseshoes up on Amazon.com. There's a guy there who seems to love the holy hell out of Mars' records, but hates Paul and everything he's done since Pleased To Meet Me. Very amusing. And on a personal note, AIN'T NOBODY TAKIN' MY AVATAR!!! Thank you.

I'm not a huge fan. I don't really enjoy him as a vocalist and its hard to move past that to get to the music. I have 75% Less Fat and I don't think I've listened to it more than 3 times.
I did recently see him at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for an artist lead tour and say that he seemed like a very great guy and definitely patient and I think his artwork is amazing. Its cool online but it glows in person, so if you have a chance, check it out

Yeah, Chris' husky voice I guess sometimes doesn't work. I would have to say that Horseshoes is his most commercially appealing release. Monkee Sees is a great pop song...
However I can't get into Chris' "White Patty Rap" too much on Tenterhooks. "75% Less Fat" I have been tearing my cd collection look for it. I guess I am going to have to track down a copy again.
Chris has been part of at least 1 Golden Smog release as well, if I remember correctly...could have been their first release with their ever-changing lineup.

RE: Avatar Ok,ok... I will bow out...out of courtsey. Nice choice for a new one! Love that movie. And as for 75% Less Fat, like KGP says you can probably find it for under a dollar online at either Amazon.com or Half.com. I think I got mine used for $4 at a local store.

I actually like it a fair amount. Not as much as Westerberg or Stinson obviously, or Slim, but I think he has a lot of atleast pretty good songs.
Horseshoes & Handgrenades gets the most listening from me, I like it a lot.

Chris is pretty fun to listen to and when you are in the mood for off beat stuff I think I will give him a listen more often esp. "tenterhooks"... Like after playing a Jonathan Richman record or something. Horseshoes is my favorite as well.

I like Horseshoes & Hand Grenades a bunch, and 75% Less Fat OK. I don't like Tenterhooks and - noticing a trend - never bothered to get Anonymous Botch.

I've listened to him a few times and haven't been impressed. Too boring for me. I always liked that Paul and Tommy had the best of both worlds. They can both write great ballads and then the next minute write a power pop/ punk song.
As for Mars, If any of you have seen those "99 Cents Only" stores, I've seen 75% less fat and tenterhooks both brand new for 99cents. I guess i should pick them up but i haven't yet.........
Sometimes you can also find the Hulk Hogan and the Wresting Boot Band there.....Highly recommended.....Hulk Rocks and Hulk Raps and Hulk even sings a tender ballad "hulkster in heaven" sample lyric: " I used to tear my shirt but then you tore my heart. When the hulkster gets to heaven we'll tag up again"
Maybe paul could learn something......haha

Horseshoes was pretty good, 75% was good, Tenterhooks was bad and Aynonomous Botch was crap. And am I the ONLY fool that bought Botch? It was amazing how each record wasn't as good as the previous. I always figured he had enough great ideas to fill 1 1/2 cds, but he dragged it out to four.

I love "H&H", but "Tenter Hooks" and "75% Less Fat" didn't do much for me.
Still, my all-time favorite, post-Mats record is Bash n Pop's "FNIKM"!!! Freddy

And am I the ONLY fool that bought Botch? I bought it for the cover artwork - Mars' strength is definitely in his brush. I love the video for "Monkey Sees", a Kinks-slanted-towards-Dave song if there ever was one.
