When can we discuss the merits for the "When It Began" video?

Ahhh, this one also confirms the Mats connection to Boy George. ;D And Michael J. Fox!

that drummer was ~21 yr old Josh Freeze, who was up-and-coming back then but now is considered one of the best drummers out there. His resume is ridiculous the bands/artists he's played with... and yeah, like all of the greats, he has a little bit of this guy in him. He's an amazing drummer, then and still. Really impressive in the video, just seemed misproportioned...

Holy hell! I've never seen that before, really put some energy into what I always thought was a so-so PW solo tune. Is it just me or does the drummer's head look too big for his body, like he's wearing one of those President masks? I like how they change clothes between songs, like the Mats performance.

Beautiful! Thanks for posting the seeing through Paul clips. Any more clips you can post would be appreciated.

I'm a big Stanton fan. His performance in "Repo Man" is one of my favorites. I wish the 'Mats had been included in the soundtrack but I imagine for that film Michael Nesmith wanted a more west coast punk-rock kind of sound. Yes, I can imagine Harry Dean and the boys having a good time together on SNL. Stanton may well be a rock and roll fan but his music tastes are probably wide ranging. He does a nice job singing a south-of-the-border ballad for the PARIS, TEXAS soundtrack (another GREAT Stanton role). Have you seen the video of the Replacements "performance"? I posted it on my website here: redredwineonasunday.blogspot.com/2009/11/replacements-banned-from-saturday-night_28.htmlSo beautiful. Glad I know where it's posted now, can never find it. Nice blog, by the way.

"Another squirrel, another hamster" ad-libbed during their last show ever playing "Another Girl, Another Planet".

Androgynous and Lola kinda have similar themes, I think. Some gender skewing going on in there.

I think the best way to gauge is listening to the songs live around that time. You can hear the same songs stacked up against other Mats songs. I know they use to open their sets up with 'Talent Show', and hearing 'I'll Be You' before 'Bastards' really shows it's one of the strongest songs in they ever wrote, in my opinion. They absolutely kill it on the Lake Compounce, CT recording from 1989 often paired under Shit, Shower and Shave. "If I was from Canada then I'll keep all the drugs federal express".

CFMT...I always thought it was a good mix of Stereo's heart and Mono's sloppy rock without a single dud track.

Way to keep the discussion alive. I give PTMM over Tim by a hair, or by a Can't Hardly Wait.

I first heard them covered by the Get Up Kids. "Beer for Breakfast". The true love affair started when my friend ran an online radio stream, and he played "Left of the Dial (live)". I'm pretty sure it was Westerberg post-Mats, but he put so much into that song, I think my friend's described it so beautifully and simply "you can smell the whiskey". That song stayed with me, and within a few months I had every Mats release and was well on my way into all of Paul's solo work.

I'd have to say Please to Meet Me is number one for me. Also has the Westerberg lyrics I chose for a tattoo. I'm gonna guess that tattoo reads "One foot in the door, the other one in the gutter". Sad how well that sums up my life at this point.

Really dug Hi Fi Way. It took a few listens and then I was hooked. Going to dive into Hourly Daily next. Excellent!! I actually prefer Record No. 4 to Hourly Daily. On Hourly Daily, Tim Rogers goes back to his 60's British influences (e.g. The Kinks and the Who), whereas Record No. 4 is more Stonesy / Replacements rock'n'roll. Also, check out Sound As Ever, if for no other reason than it has Berlin Chair on it, which IMO is one of the best songs YAI ever recorded. I love Record No. 4 already if only for the perceived Big Star reference. I'll scoop that one up next.

Then check out "Hourly Daily" and "Convicts" Then "Record No.4" and 'Deliverance". Actually, "Record no.4" is my 2nd choice after Hi Fi Way but that's just my taste. And despite bad reviews, I really liked "Deliverance". Really dug Hi Fi Way. It took a few listens and then I was hooked. Going to dive into Hourly Daily next.

I can hear it, too. My friend recommended the new album knowing my love of Westerberg. He described them as the Replacements meets Neutral Milk Hotel. I think any sloppy bar rock gets a Westerberg nod, and it is an amazing album worth checking out.

I counted and I have over 20 versions of Can't Hardly Wait between demos, remasters, live and covers. It's definitely the 'Mats most covered song that I have recordings of. My favorite is probably by Micah Schnabel, front man of Two Cow Garage.
