Gibsons are superior in quality of materials. They use better parts and are put together with more care. They are constructed of better grades of wood, paint, frets, electronics and pickups. A well maintained Gibson will retain and increase its value over time. They are made in the USA.
Epiphones are primarily made in China now. You will not get the same sustain and tone with an Epi that you would with its Gibson counterpart due to the cheaper wood and pickups. The 3rd world assembly line attention to detail doesn't help either. You occasionally see big names playing them, but the Epis of today are not the same Epiphones that John Lennon was playing on top of the Apple building.
That said, you have to go with what you can afford and you will pay alot for those extras. For what they cost, Epiphones are fine guitars capable of decent tone. Like the Japanese and Mexican Fenders, they are decent options for someone who isn't looking to spend close to a grand or more.

It took me a while to settle into the format, but in the end I liked the book quite a bit. I do have to disagree on this point. I thought that part was particularly well done. I thought he did a pretty good job describing Bob's life before his death, and by the time I got through the eulogy I had a pretty good lump in my throat.

You am I was brilliant on Detroit last night. They came out with what to me is the most mats-like tune from their record and really tore it up for a short 35/40 minute set. Very high energy, great guitar tones and playing. The small crowd didn't get their aussie humor...
Anyhow - having never seen them before and only knowing their latest record, I have to say they are the best new (to me) band i've seen in some time. Higly recommended to any fans of 84-87 era mats.

Looking forward to the Detroit show tonight but I was disappointed to learn You Am I Aren't headlining. I love the Convicts record and hope to pick up an earlier release at the show. (for the record they're Australian, not British).
Haven't heard much of the Smoking Popes but the friend I am going with loves them.

I think the solo in They're Blind is pretty tasty.

I've heard about (but never seen) a show from the First Avenue PTMM era that was pro-shot for Minneapolis PBS. Supposedly it never made it to the screen, but the footage exists. Anyone else ever heard of this?

the way i heard it was that the first pressing of the EP were actually hand stamped, then a second pressing with a printed version of the hand stamp was released. Does this sound right? I actually have one of the hand stamped ones and always wondered how many there are...

Last night the Hold Steady played in Detroit. Before the set both Hootenanny and Stink were played over the PA.

Saturday night i was at an Ontario Hockey League game between the Plymouth Whalers and the Oshawa Generals at Plymouth, MI's Compuware Arena. A couple minutes into the second period during a stoppage they played a few seconds of Can't Hardly Wait.

The Nils were an amazing, underrated, unknown band. They definately had that early mpls sound and were more influential in those circles than people realize. If you can find a copy of the long out of print self-titled record (Rock Hotel Records/1987) pick it up. If not, the compilation including everything else Greenfields and Daylight is great as well - and available here: www.magwheel.com/nils.html. The Chino Mala Leche ep is amazing as well, but short. - J

I heard Waiting For Somebody on Sirius Radio's new 90's alternative channel - Lithium 24 - yesterday. The station is ok in theory, but pretty much every time I have ever turned it on they play All Apologies by Nirvana. Every time. I like Nirvana, but the channel needs to expand their scope a bit...
