As mentioned in the Random Replacements thread, Jim Walsh will be a guest on Sound Opinions this week to discuss "Let It Be": soundopinions.com/From that site, I found that the book has its own MySpace page here. You definitely need to check this out: www.myspace.com/ultrabookThere are a bunch of blog entires, a schedule of appearances and some excerpts from the book, including this quote from Tommy on "I'll Be You": Tommy Stinson: When I listen to the radio I think, "We ought to be on here and this shit shouldn't be. Because face it, no one needs to hear Jethro Tull on the radio anymore. I don't want to dog AOR radio, because they're giving us support now and they never did in the past, but this is the fucking Eighties, and they're still playing the worst shit of the Seventies and calling that classic rock. Boy, if "Aqualung" is a classic, then fucking "I'll Be You" is history."

And most importantly:
"The story is illustrated with both rarely seen and classic photos"

You definitely need to check this out: www.myspace.com/ultrabookum, what's with the freaky muzak versions of Skyway and Can't Hardly Wait on that site? i mean, seriously. what could possibly be the reason why a site supposedly promoting a supposedly legendary band be playing anything other than that band's original music?

Without wishing to be unduly controversial I think they're marvellous...chintzy, ersatz and tacky - ideal elevator music - it sounds like a hotel house band had a gun held to their heads whilst they were recording them .. Edit: This is unfair - i've just heard them on proper speakers.

Strib: Folks who attended Paul Westerberg's Q&A taping at First Ave were treated to free tickets to a Nov. 28 main-room tribute to the Replacements, the official "release" party for Jim Walsh's oral history on the band, "All Over But the Shouting." Participants will include the Honeydogs, Alarmists, Birthday Suits, Jeremy Messersmith, Evening Rig and lots more. Rumors that the surviving 'Mats might also show up seemed as far-fetched as ever after hearing Westerberg talk two weeks ago.

The Sound Opinion guys certainly had boned up on their Mats history, but if they are amazed to think that Tommy was only 15 or 16 when the band formed, they'd be even more amazed at how young he really was.

And at around 39:30, they enter into the great bacon v. fingernails debate...and fall squarely on the side of bacon!

I'm hoping that, aside from writing the blurb for the flyer, Nick Hornby uses some of his clout in Hollywood to get a Westerberg/Mats tune or two in his film projects...

I can't remember what memorable albums came out in 1991, but I thought it interesting that their thoughts were "I Will Dare" would have ranked pretty high. That it was a song ahead of its time.
I sort of thought around that time it was very grungy and all. A song like that, would it have survived? Would it have done well? Just asking for sake of discussion. It seemed as if the music was changing around that time and a song like "I Will Dare" might have been out of place, once again.

A nice little surprise arrived at my front door this afternoon - a comp of the book!
Besides looking for my name in the acknowledgments (which felt a bit like Steve Martin in The Jerk), I paged through it and read a few quotes. I have to say it looks great, and features some fantastic pics.
