I have two audio systems- one that consists of ceiling speakers in all of the rooms in my house, hooked up to a switching unit, an old Yamaha receiver, a laptop and DAC, and CD player, this is for casual listening. The 2nd system is my audiophile reference system in the master bedroom, strictly for serious listening. After dinner and a few cocktails, I sat down and listened to the Stasium remix CD on my reference setup, sat in the sweet spot. Trying to use an open mind, trying to pretend I never heard the album before, it was a revelation, very remarkable. I had a similar reaction when I listened to Giles Martin's remix of Sgt Pepper.
The soundstage, the aural placement of instruments was precise and firm, the reverb and echo used in much smaller measures. Unlike the original Tim, this one sounds like the band is literally playing in front of me, in my room. The obvious night & day improvements are the drums, a much better bass tone and vocals. IMO, headphones and earbuds do not do justice to this record, good stereo speakers a must.
Standout tracks- Swinging Party, one of my three favorite songs on the album, sounds like it could have been on the White Album. IMO, Tommy Stinson's bass dominates this song, he provides the main melody and his playing is very McCartney-like, the remix really brings this out. Lay It Down Clown, a song about Peter Buck and previously a throwaway, sounds like it could have played on the radio, for me the remixed backing vocals changes the song quite a bit, along with the other elements, especially guitars, drums, vocals. And the new Little Mascara sounds awesome, I love the recovered guitar fills and the extended ending. Bob Stinson shines on this cut.
Overall, this was well worth waiting for. Since Giles Martin remixed Sgt Pepper, I never listen to the old mix, to me it is gone. This new Tim just might be the same for me. And also worth noting, Mehr's liner notes are absolutely superb, the man is a damned good writer. Today, I will delve into the outtakes.

I can't fathom them sitting on that electric version of "Can't Hardly Wait". If they had swapped it in for "Lay it Down Clown" Tim would be the best side B of all time.

I can’t get over this mix. Just incredible. Loving every minute. The guitars soar, the drums and bass are loud and clear and the vocals…. Fuck me.
Every song is a highlight. My opinion of Little Mascara has probably changed the most. Before it was a song I always admired, but now? Christ, it’s a masterpiece. The mix of this tune… Bob and Paul’s guitars… I’m even appreciating the lyrics to this one even more than before. The second verse is Hemingwayesque, almost like something out In Our Time…. Brilliant stuff.
Like Curmudgeonman posted above, Swingin Party sounds like something from The White Album now. The rockers sound incredible. Bastards is anthemic as fuck. Here Comes A Regular…. The emotion in the arrangement and Paul’s voice with the reverb removed….
Loving the extra tracks and the live show is brilliant too. We’ll done, Jason Jones, Bob Mehr and Ed Stasium on a job well fuckin done.

Getting Tim: Live On KEXP vibes from this. Not necessarily a criticism. Sounds less “like a record” and more like a document now. Also feel like this mix really pushes a shoot-for-the-moon energy that, to me, reveals Westerberg’s genius and—he’d never admit it—ambition.

Coffee mug & t-shirt arrived today, odd because I actually got a tracking number Friday for the "extras".
But strangely enough, I also received a tracking number early this morning for the records & CD's that were delivered Thursday. Makes no sense.
I also received an email from Rhino asking about their customer service, I told them the rep that replied to my inquiry was prompt, but the late orders are getting old, every product I've ever ordered from Rhino comes late with a new excuse.

Rhino is horrible. They know they have the people who want the "extras"......but they are seriously making me reconsider using another provider next time. They should ship all the preorders first, with enough time to have them arrive the day of release. It's not that difficult to figure out. Take all who ordered, make a list, then plan out to ship 10-14 days in advance....My order shipped last week....delivery was set for Sunday.....then updated to Saturday (yeah!), then back to Sunday by 7pm. Sunday 7pm came and went and now delivery shows at tomorrow 7pm. Imagine running another business like this....you'd be out of business within a year. I'd pay extra to have the option of shipping 2 day FedEx or something. Also, what's the point of tracking if it simply just says "out for delivery"....

Anybody know what in the hell Paul is “singing” in the bridge part of “Dose of Thunder” around 1:15? Uncle Henry, Auntie Helen _____ friend, Uncle Henry Auntie Helen _____ again. Huh?

It’s a somewhat convoluted inside joke about the weather that was explained in full in the video that Rhino posted and then took down hours later. He’s singing “Auntie Em…Uncle Henry,” who are both characters in Wizard of Oz, which was a reference to Midwest tornadoes.

Yes, it started when Erdelyi started to panic a bit when he heard the tornado sirens going off, something he never heard in NY.

Maybe if they'd stopped there I'd be on board. Last thing I need are more versions of that song. But I never had a problem with Clown. I like the subject matter and a good case can be made that it's a double reference, not only to blow, but to the 8-Ball Saloon and pool hall in Ann Arbor, where they were known to hang, and very possibly score. Hard to imagine after all this time different songs swapped in and out. "Nowhere Is My Home," as great as it is, I don't think would have fit with what ended up on there.

Yeah, the tracking becomes useless with that hand-off I guess. Mine never even changed to "on the way." The part that's more ridiculous is that months ago they publicly announced through multiple audiophile youtubers that they were improving their packaging in response to all the complaints surrounding their first two "Rhino Hi-Fi" premium releases, only to ship these out rattling around in oversized boxes with no packing material (or a single square of brown paper at best).
After a few more listens, I'd say this is easily my favorite of the reissues so far. The only thing missing for me is the original mix of Nowhere Is My Home. I still have my Boink! record, but a remastered cut of the original mix is kind of a weird omission, especially when the new mix is so different.

The packing was of decent amount although small ding on single.....oh well.....so excited to crank it once the workday ends!

Mine arrived Sunday, intact and packaged well enough. I wasn't in town anyway so I didn't stress. The 7" is worth the 2-day delay for me, but I get the anger and I would have been agitated if I was home over the weekend. I didn't want to dive in on Spotify (with commercials, no less, plus Fuck Spotify), so I waited to listen to the vinyl on Sunday night. More thoughts soon, but in general, it rules. xx

I finally got my box yesterday and agree with everyone else, that new mix is PHENOMENAL! The 2nd disc - the remaster of the original mix- doesn't do much for me, but I didn't really expect it to. Excited to dig into the 3rd and 4th discs! My 7" somehow didn't get messed up and no dings to the box!
As for the doc, I got lucky and someone that downloaded it before it got pulled offered it to me to be added to my drive, where it now is!
I also added in a few Mats covers in the Mats drive - Hole covering Unsatisfied from a live bootleg 7", and acoustic WWCD radio session takes of "Left Of The Dial" from The Gaslight Anthem and "Can't Hardly Wait" from Band Of Horses". The electric version The Gaslight Anthem does on a live youtube video I like better of their two takes on it, but the audio quality is horrible.

Looks like there's a cool Hold My Life tote bag being given out with purchase of the box at indie stores. On the one hand, that's great, and I'd like one, but I already paid for my box through Rhino to get THEIR exclusive on the 7". I hate multiple exclusives, but I hate it a lot more when it's for box sets.
Here's a pic of that and the Mats themed menu for a listening party that was in Minneapolis, that sounds like it was an awesome time!
