I didn't think too much about this. In no particular order. I picked my mostly favorite of each song, most of which have been covered multiple times. I made no effort to give more weight to the original composer (if such could even be verified) or to the first artist to record it, or to the most well-known, best-selling, or critically acclaimed versions. I did stick to a more purist blues roster, and did not consider versions done by the big British blues groups of the 60's and 70's, or their American counterparts of the time, or modern blues revivalists like Johnny Winter or Stevie Ray Vaughan...I was gonna limit it to only one song per artist, but I couldn't put less than two Howlin' Wolf...
TEN OF MY FAVORITE BLUES SONGS:
ROBERT JOHNSON – "CROSS ROAD BLUES" ELMORE JAMES – “DUST MY BROOM” BILLY BOY ARNOLD – “I WISH YOU WOULD” JOHN LEE HOOKER – “BOOGIE CHILLUN’” MUDDY WATERS – “MANNISH BOY” HOWLIN’ WOLF – "SMOKESTACK LIGHTNING" HOWLIN’ WOLF – "KILLING FLOOR" WILLIE DIXON – “BACK DOOR MAN” SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON - “EYESIGHT TO THE BLIND” BUKKA WHITE – “FIXIN’ TO DIE”

The first person I thought of when I saw the title of this thread was Robert Johnson and the first song I thought of was Cross Road Blues (followed by Terraplane Blues for some reason).
I was interested to see Bukka White on the list. Although I knew the Dylan cover of 'Fixin' to Die', I really had no idea who he was until a few days ago when I came across his name (kind of) in a novel by Willie Nelson. The book is called 'Pretty Paper' and in it a bluesman named Bukka 'bottleneck' DuPree is mentioned. So I looked up the name and it seems it is a fictionalized mix of two names: 'champion' Jack Dupree and Bukka White. Then I went to Wiki and read all about Bukka (Booker T. Washington White). And then I checked this page and found this post mentioning Bukka White again. Very cool.
I definitely recommend 'Pretty Paper' to any fan of country or blues music. It was well written and quite enjoyable. But beware! The book will make you crave chili and rice.
