I'll probably get a bunch of shit for this, but I liked it...It makes this song sound like Weimar Republic cabaret...

I wonder if Gary Louris had anything to do with her choosing to cover this song? He co-wrote several songs with her on this record (What I Deserve).

So I just downloaded something at Dimeadozen which is purportedly an unreleased solo album by Sussana Hoffs from 1994. It features a song called 'Darling One' but I don't think it's a cover of the Mats tune. Or maybe it is but with different lyrics? It also features her singing the Jonathan Edwards song 'Sunshine' which Paul also covered. But what I am most intrigued by in this recording is a track listing for 'Go'. I haven't listened to the album (am downloading it as I type) but I am really hoping it is a cover of the Mats song since it is one of my all time favorites along with 16 Blue, Swingin' Party, and Nowhere is my Home.
Does anybody out there know? Has anybody heard this?
The uploader has this to say about Hoffs (and mentions Westerberg): "I've wanted to get this up for some time, mainly so everyone can hear her ROCK. Her cover of Jonathan Edward's Sunshine makes this worthwhile. If you think all she's good for musically is wimpy stuff like Eternal Flame, then get this. While she will be forever saddled with the soft romantic crap like Flame, this shows that at one time, she really knew how to make raw, tough rock and roll. When she quotes the Pistols near the end, you aren't even offended. Now I know where Westerberg got the idea to rock the song."

I actually dug the early Bangles stuff, the first 2 albums, they had a nice retro 60's paisley sound I dug. Then they went commercial and their more rocking sound got changed for mainstream dreck.
Susannah Hoffs has also done a lot of stuff with Matthew Sweet, so she can rock the power pop stuff too. But no, I am not familiar with her doing "Go" and would be very surprised if she did a cover.

That first Bangles EP and album were both great. "Different Light" had great songs (including September Gurls) but suffered from dated, 80s over-production. Their third album was decent, but not at the level of the first two. Their comeback record "Doll Revolution" (2003) was great - lacked a bit of the edge the earlier stuff had, but a super solid songs and effort. Their latest didn't grab me too much. They were cursed in that their two biggest hits were arguably, literally, the two weakest songs in their catalog - Walk Like and Egyptian and Eternal Flame. They had a darker, guitar-based, Beatles side too. There's a great MTV concert from Pittsburgh (86?) that you can watch on YouTube I think. I'm not sure about Go, but that Darling One is not the Replacements song, according to Wikipedia. I have her first solo record (Cassette) and haven't listened to it in 20+ years, but remember it being along the lines of the weaker Bangles stuff - sappy and over-produced. The 3 covers records she did with M Sweet had their moments. On a Westerberg related note, I remember reading a story around the Stereo/Mono time, I think, where Paul was in his garage with a guitar case that had BANGLES on it, probably something he bought that once belonged to Suzanna or Vicki. And here's a CNN article comparing the rise and fall of both bands: www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/06/01/eye.ent.bands/And I thought I saw something very recently about a mix-tape Vicky had from those days that they would listen to on tour that had The Replacements on it.

Thanks for the background info guys! Very cool. The CNN article sent me into full musical detective mode because it mentions a band called the La De Das. I immediately thought of Athens musical great Vic Chesnutt. I dimly remembered a conversation with a guy named Nicky who was in a band called the la-di-das along with Vic Chesnutt and Todd McBride (Vic went solo with Michael Stipe producing two of his albums and Todd McBride would later form the criminally overlooked Dashboard Saviors who signed to Twin/Tone Records and were produced by Peter Buck). Well, it turns out that these are entirely different bands from different eras (the la de das were a 60's band from New Zealand and the la-di-das were an 80's band from Athens); but I do love all of the connections. As mentioned, Hoffs has recorded with Matthew Sweet on some covers records. Even the staid pages of the New Yorker, in reviewing the covers albums, mention that it would have been nice to see them take a stab at a Replacements song. Matthew lived in Athens for a while and was briefly in a band with Stipe called Community Trolls around 1983/84 and in a band with Linda Stipe called Oh-OK. If you ever wondered how multi-talented Michael Stipe is, you can hear him play the accordion on the Trolls song 'Tainted Obligation.' UPDATE: Just listened to the track called 'Go' on the unreleased Hoffs record and it is DEFINATELY NOT a cover of the brilliant Mats tune. Oh well.

raccoon - I don't think it was too surprising that it wasn't the cover tune...otherwise, how's the rest of the recording? I have a friend who likes Susannah's solo stuff---he's not a hard rocker guy, but pop stuff. he actually LIKED the more mainstream Bangles stuff! Jer - yeah, agreed, those first two albums were good, they had a nice sound with the vocal harmonies. "Im In Line", off that first EP. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOYI_A8dUAsVery evocative of that 60's pop sound. I was okay with "All Over the Place, "Different Light" started to lose me, but it had some decent pop tunes on there and they did the September Gurls cover. I think Vicki and Debbi really drove the harder stuff, I could be wrong. I always thought thetwo of them wanted to rock harder rather than do the middle of the road pop stuff that came with their break through.

Everyone knows The Flame and I Want You to Want Me, but there is a darker side with minor chords and deeper themes. I was huge into Different Light when it was new, but now the sound of that record is so dated that it's hard to listen to. Still some fantastic songs on there. All Over the Place is really their high-water mark. They were hungry and had a good balance between the edge of that early EP and the musicianship of the later stuff. I thought that Simon & Garfunkel song they did for Less than Zero was great too. I'm always on the lookout for those 2 The Bangs 7"s they did before they changed their name.

That's a good way of putting it....Like I said, I had a feeling that Vicki and Debbi wanted to rock a little harder, and their earlier stuff is fun and I liked it. You are correct as well about the production being of its time. I completely forgot about their cover of "Going Down to Liverpool" off of All Over The Place too. I really loved the vocal harmonies they had on that cover. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj7OJeyhq2QGood luck finding any copies of The Bangs! That is some collector's item stuff.

A few months back i scored an original pressing of the first Bangles ep for like 6 bucks.
About a year and a half ago i saw them at the Whiskey, mostly because my girlfriend wanted to see them. I ended up having a really good time. Mike Mills and Fred Armisen even made guest appearances. Mills sang back up on September Gurls.
I once read an article where Alex Chilton said he was able to buy a car with the royalties he received from their cover of September Gurls..

Yeah, that EP was the first one I bought....loved their energy and 60's era sound.
Would still like to find their stuff they did as The Bangs.
That sounded like a fun time; I've never seen them. So now, they just seem like this mythical Southern Cal band I'll just only hear about.

Another interesting about the Bangles is that in addition to playing with all the so called Paisley Underground bands, they started out playing with punk bands like Red Cross, Social Distortion, Black Flag, Descendents, etc...

ha! so that kind of confirms my feeling that Vicki and Debbi (or all of them) wanted to rock a bit harder...but I guess they made the decision to go with commercial success. I guess that allowed them the financial freedom to do what they want to do now.

I saw them Summer of 87 in Milwaukee off the Different Light record, but the Simon & Garfunkel cover (Hazy Shade of Winter) was out too I think, or at least they opened with that. Then I saw them in Detroit, April 89 off Everything. I don't think either show I saw could touch that 86 show from MTV. I've wanted to catch them again, but so disappointed that Micki isn't in the band anymore. I considered coming out to LA for that Whiskey show. The original versions of Going Down to Liverpool by The Waves, then re-recorded with Katrina on vocals are great, probably better than the Bangles' version IMO. The katrina &TW version especially.
