Apart from a pair of small tours and some in-store performances documented on the concert DVD Come Feel Me Tremble, Westerberg hasn't been on the road in eight years, something that isn't lost on his son.
"He's the one who has the job," says Westerberg. "He gets up and goes away to school. I'm the one who stays at home. So it's weird for him when I have to tell him that Dad's going to go to work and he's going to be away for a week. It's like, 'What do you mean work? I thought your work was sitting in the basement.'"
That said, when Westerberg leaves the basement this time out, he won't just be putting his household duties and soundtrack work on hold-he'll also be neglecting his monthly gig as a playground monitor at his son's school. "Basically you just get the ball when it goes into the street. I break up the occasional fight, let them do what they want, make sure they don't get hurt."
He adds, "At first I wore one of those glow-in-the-dark vests until they sort of figured out who I was, and then they would come up to me and ask me things like, 'Are you a rock star?' And my answer of course was, 'Would a rock star be standing here on your playground?'"
