After reading the book, and hearing of his mental state at times, it makes me wonder about the injury and if it was a cry for help of some sort. Who cleans candles out anyways? Thoughts?

I've hurt myself doing dumber things. Cry for help? I kind of doubt it. My guess is, Paul was just cleaning out a candle stick and... oops!... the screw driver slipped.

It could have been an odd accident, but coupled with his history of addiction and struggles with painkiller addiction, that caught my eye too. I wasn't thinking "cry for help" so much as possible drug-seeking behavior.
On the other hand, he seems to have a knack for hurting himself, so maybe it was just an accident.

I always thought it was weird whenever people who were professional musicians (which, most of those instruments involve functioning hands? And complete motor skill?) engaged in "fistfights"...Seems like a huge risk..."Fistfights" seem kinda weird to me, anyway...Obviously, people have, traditionally, been able to wreak considerable damage on another person with just their hands...Sometimes, even killing them...But you're matching your "hand" - which, seems to me, is a really delicate construction of many really small, fragile bones - against a "skull", which might be the hardest, most fortified part of the human body...I'm not denying that you could cause irreparable damage to that person's brain with the right hit, but you might spend the rest of your life trying to learn how to write left-handed, because your right hand was forever mangled...Eh...My advice, if it comes down to mortal, personal combat, I'm just gonna pull a gun, stand 25 yards away, and hire a lawyer...Maybe I'll go to prison, but at least I'll be in prison without incapitating pain, and I can still open mail, and write letters, and masturbate...

Right? It's just so high-risk and self-destructive, far more likely to hurt them than anyone they're pounding on... but that seems like the theme of Trouble Boys. "What can we do today to screw up our health, sanity, and the future of our band? LET'S GO!!"

I've cleaned out small votive sized candle holders several times. Just because the candle has melted away doesn't mean you throw away the candle holder. You get the old hard wax out and put a new candle in. It was a simple accident. Accidents happen. Should Paul never chop vegetables for fear of cutting a finger?
