Here at WYEP-FM in Pittsburgh, we were excited for the Replacements show scheduled for yesterday (unfortunately postponed), so we decided to rank all officially-released songs by the band. I know it's a very subjective undertaking, but it was a lot of fun to discuss, argue, and write about. I was wondering what you folks think of our list: wyep.org/replacements

I know it's a very subjective undertaking, but it was a lot of fun to discuss, argue, and write about. I was wondering what you folks think of our list: wyep.org/replacementsAmazing level of effort! Sorry that you guys have to wait for your show in Pittsburgh. All of us would have different rankings; the few that stuck out on first glance for me are: 145. "The Ledge" It's never been a favorite of mine but it seems from the reaction it gets live that a lot of people really like it. 83. "Seen Your Video". #NOPE #TOP25 60. "Nobody" + 54. "Valentine" No no no no no no no. No! #TOP25 38. "If Only You Were Lonely". #TOP25 (hmm my top 25 is gonna be crowded) 33. "Nowhere Is My Home" 33 might be an OK placement until I see that means Merry Go Round is higher. Merry Go Round would be at least #100 if not higher for me. 13. "Little Mascara" I'm coming out of the closet as a "Little Mascara" denier. Wouldn't make my top 50.

As you say, a list such as this is very subjective. Stuff I'd have higher: Nowhere Is My Home, Satellite, Kissin In Action, Seen Your Video, Gudbye T'Jane and The Ledge (not a huge fan, but 145 is ridiculously low). Stuff I'd have lower: Merry Go Round, Anywhere's Better Than Here, Rattlesnake, Shut Up. On the whole the songs from Sorry Ma and Stink are way overrated here when compared to Westerberg's writing from Color Me Impressed on.

Yeah, we had a couple of people in our panel of folks rating songs that were a little biased towards the early albums. Which is fine, of course, but it does change the character of a list like this. Seems like many fans can either be categorized as either "Tim and earlier" people or "Let It Be and later" people.
I can cop to being the cause of "The Ledge" being so low on the list, and the only time I allowed my personal feelings to affect a song's placement. If only they hadn't done the falling effect on the vocal at the end...

As not a big fan of this song, I did enjoy hearing it at the Cambridge show, it's never going to be a song I'm going to be hoping for, but they really do kick ass on it live.

I thought it was interesting that Tommy apparently doesn't do the scream at the end of The Ledge anymore. He used to. Has he done it at all on this tour yet?

A lot of "All Shook Down" should be higher, (except My Little Problem, has always sounded forced), and "Hold My Life" is top 5 for me, simply because it was my entry point to the band, and NO song epitomizes the Replacements in both sound and approach more than Hold My Life does...everything about it is tense and tenuous and that everything about could spin out of control at any point, but yet it never quite does. And, "Can't Hardly Wait" is the #1 single that should have been, so it goes #1 for me.

I was surprised Valentine was so poorly ranked (I'd have it in the top 30 or so), but my #1 would definitely be Whole Food Blues. Damn those hippies!

Another ranking of all the Mats songs that I just stumbled across. Not sure how I feel about their “key lyric” section - it seems to always be the first line. From some guys that have a music podcast - I listened to their “Dead Man’s Pop” episode (a little ‘meh’.) www.suburbspod.com/2019/08/23/every-replacements-song-ranked/

Love a good weird list. For instance:
116: "Wake Up" 108: "We Know the Night" 84: "Nowhere is My Home"
50: "Shooting Dirty Pool" 43: "Red Red Wine"
I love the latter two and defend them every chance I get. But for heaven's sake.
