The Town Pump is right around the corner - cool townie-ish/Irish place. Good drinks. Detroit Beer Company is a local brewery about 2 blocks away. Decent bar food and micro-brews. State Bar is attached to the Fillmore and is very cool and dark. The downside is that it will be packed and hard to get a drink. The upside is that it's a really cool place, great music will be playing, and everyone there will be going to the show. Drinks in the Fillmore will be super expensive. Usually they'll let you go between the Fillmore and the State Bar (without even going outside) during the show. Hockeytown Cafe is right there - shitty beer, but uber-Hockey fans might get a kick out of it. Park Bar is right there too, across from the Town Pump. Never been my scene, but might be worth stepping in. Cliff Bell's is a nice place on the next block - old-school classy Detroit all the way. Might be an extra buck or 2 for a drink but the pour will be great and the place is super cool.
For good food Union Street and Majestic Cafe are both up the street - a really short drive. Great food. Slow's BBQ is great, but usually a wait. Plenty more if anyone needs suggestions. Detroit has a lot to offer and we're happy to help.
When you get to the show - PAY FOR PARKING. Don't park on the street. There's garages and lots all over the place. Also - Woodward Ave is all tore up for the light-rail project so best to approach down Cass or John R and park without dealing with Woodward if possible.

Thanks Jer for the extensive and helpful recommendations! We're coming in from Buffalo and are looking forward to a great time. Wish the Tigers had a 1:00 game that day!

I appreciate the info about the Woodward construction, Jer. Wish I knew the area better because I'll prob get lost taking an alt route LOL. We're meeting up with a bunch of people at the Park Bar, and apparently Bucharest Grill is adjacent to it. Looks like they have a decent menu and cheap eats (which means I can afford more beer)!

Thanks for the rundown on what's in the area. Going to the show with my wife and this will be her first rock show. Should be great. I've seen them in Toronto and Forest Hills. This looks like a great venue.

The Fillmore is an ok venue. It's a beautiful old theater. Sound is hit and miss - I've heard bands sound great and bands sound terrible in there. Last time I saw the pre-reunion mats was there a couple nights before their last show in 91. Last time a Replacement played there was GnR a couple years ago.

I kind of hate the Fillmore as a concert venue. It always feels like it's difficult to get a decent spot to see the stage and a bit hokey with all of the different levels. It was a great room back when it was still known as the State Theater. That was a traditional old-school movie house. Saw a ton of great bands there back in the 80s (including an absolutely killer show by my favorite guilty pleasure, The Alarm with the Long Ryders opening). But once it was renovated and became Clubland it lost its charm.
BTW, I was also at that Mats show in 91 and almost walked out. It was so awful and depressing. I remember I couldn't wait to leave and make it across town to St. Andrews to see Birdland, which was, at that moment, my favorite band on the planet. What's kind of funny is that I have since chatted with Birdland's Lee Vincent about that night and he had no idea that the Replacements were playing Detroit that same night in what would turn out to be their penultimate show. He said that had they known, Birdland would have been their as well.

The Rub Pub next door (across the side street) has awesome BBQ pork nachos and decent atmosphere. My fave pre gig food (with beers). Seen too many Fillmore shows to count Iggy, Ramones, Pretenders, Alarm (loved that show!), tragically Hip (many times), Cake.....to name a few.... Can't wait!!!!

The Bucharest Grill is one street behind The Fil. 2040 park ave. Great mid east place. My recommendation. Do not go to Hockeytown. Too touristy obnoxious. State bar next to Fil is good dive type bar. See yall there. Any1 wanna chip in for a room. HOTEL PARTY Detroit style???!! Ok. PM me.
