As Concerts Return to Forest Hills Stadium, So Do ComplaintsThe city’s Department of Environmental Protection has recorded sound in excess of permissible levels, and issued a notice of violation this week to the concert producers for the Replacements’ too-loud finale on Friday, which closed a show in which the opening bands had repeatedly been warned to turn it down. (love, down down love) On Friday, as one of the opening acts was playing, many punk rock fans in the crowd said they wanted more. Why weren’t the Hold Steady playing louder? Not pumping enough bass to numb their hearing? Not turning the intimate, outdoor arena into the virtual percussive subwoofer it was designed to be?
At intermission, Jesse Malin, 45, a fan who grew up in Whitestone, Queens, was looking forward to the Replacements’ set.
“Hopefully they’ll be able to turn it up, like a proper rock show,” he said.

I live about 5 blocks from the Tennis Stadium. The Stadium hadn't been used in 20 years. Last year they finally allowed concerts there (they had some bad experiences in the 90's). The Replacements was the first real rock show since then. It wasn't that loud in the upper decks until Paul, disregarding several warnings, turned up his amplifier before Left of the Dial. Even though the fine was reportedly $3500, I'd gladly kick in part of it. Those last three songs were rock concert level volume and you could sing your lungs out without drowning anything out. It was the best thing to happen in that Stadium since Guillermo Vilas beat Jimmy Conners in the 1977 US Open.
