A little over a year after the reunited Mats started playing shows again, I think we owe it to ourselves (us gigantic Mats/PW fans) to give a little love and appreciation to Josh Freese and Dave Minehan! Josh has been quoted as to the unpredictable nature of the shows and there is tons of YouTube video to support the craziness of being part of the Mats onstage live experience. JF and DM provide the stability and skill that it takes to not only play the songs but to bring them to life in a way that we, the fans can appreciate. Josh is the consummate professional and so darn dedicated to his situation. He truly is the right guy....there can be no other....I'd have been disappointed if he wasn't part of the reunion. Minehan is a terrific guitar player and damn fun to watch too. It bothers me a little (not raining on the parade here) that PW constantly chastises DM on stage (ragging on him for the occasional wrong sound or chord, or knocking over his mic stand ie Boston Calling show)... Both guys are way more than hired guns (as some articles suggest)......I/we can accept JF and DM as true Mats now. The guys have been down the PW road before and should now be considered much more than Replacement-Replacements.......IMO. I for one am grateful these guys are Replacements.

GMTA. I was thinking the exact same thing about 5 minutes ago when I was updating the FB page and watching videos. I know it's natural for us to focus on Paul and Tommy (and for some of us [cough]me[cough] to focus on Paul), but the shows we are seeing and loving wouldn't be possible without Josh and Dave as well.

And here's a good video to showcase them:

They are absolutely perfect for this reunion. It would be cool for Paul to introduce them during the show. I also think Paul getting on Dave is all good natured and just in his personality. He did it with Slim all the time. He called slim "Stone fingers" or something like that. Paul just likes to be a goof and I love it.

definitely...give some love to Josh and Dave. Josh is amazing on the skins. He was just driving every song and his drum fills were spot on when I saw them in Boston. Glad to see that Dave had the opportunity to play on national TV again with Paul and have another career highlight.
btw, did the Fallon show upload the second song? The rehearsal song?

Hopefully they can get on more late night shows and a return to SNL might be in order. There's some pretty good momentum with this band right now. They are creating a buzz with these shows. Josh and Dave add so much energy to this band live. I don't know how old Dave is but he plays with the energy of a 20 something.

Agree with all said above. But it should be pointed out that it's Dave Minehan, not Mineham.

Paul's ribbing has always seemed good natured to me, and very in line with his personality. Dave & Josh wouldn't be up there if paul and Tommy weren't enjoying having them there.

Great thread...... They both are an important part of this........
Josh just punishes the drums like no tomorrow.....
I heard a great interview years ago on LA Radio with Josh's father, who is quite famous in his own right.......
He was musical director at Disneyland for like 30 years..
When Josh and his brother were kids they would play in the Main Street Band, Cruising Disneyland banging out tunes.......
And Kudo's to Paul for being so loyal to these two....... Great friends I am sure they are....

Agreed on all accounts above. They really are the only two with the talent and ability to change on the fly and fall right into the Replacements camp. I'm extremely glad Billie Joe is absent from the stage now. Coming out for a song or two is fine with me, but a near full set with him on stage I think takes away from DM.
I wonder if Willie Nelson will come out on stage in Austin? HA HA HA

I've been singing Josh's praises since before it was announced that he would indeed be The Mats drummer... he's easily in the top three drummer's I've had the opportunity to see drum live, if not the best. He brings so much to every damn band I've seen him with (Mats, Paul solo, NIN, Devo, APC, Vandals, etc.). I cannot say enough about how utterly mind-blowing his drumming is... I once spent an entire NIN show basically just watching the way Freese plays because he's goddamn mesmerizing sometimes! I know none of you will likely understand that since I'm pretty certain I'm the only (former?) NIN fan around these parts. But yeah... no one will ever play behind a kit for Paul with more passion, precision, & just plain raw talent as Mr. Freese! For the record... Paul picks on Freese too. Case in point... Freese wasn't doing enough for Paul during "Kiss Me on the Bus" in St Paul. Dave has definitely grown on me over the past year. He seemed a bit tentative & nervous at the Riot Fest gigs... & Bob & Slim have pretty big shoes to fill, but he's held his own & has impressed me, especially at Midway!

Couldn't think of two better dudes to play with Paul and Tommy. Definitely focused on them plenty when the band played Seattle. They really bring it.

Great thread. These guys deserve all the kudos they get & more.
We would never hear such an array of the Mats catalogue without great players like these guys & they both fit so well. They bring a ton of skill & energy to the table & I think it gives Tommy & Paul a major confidence boost. I still cannot believe how much older stuff they're playing. Just listen to Minehan on tunes like Take Me Down to the Hospital & try to imagine somebody else (other than maybe Bob Mould) trying to nail the Bob riffs. Freese is a blast to watch & along with Jon Wurster one of the hardest working & best drummers in rock today.

Both Dave Minehan & Josh Freese are great musicians. I remember seeing Paul @ The Stone Pony, in '93, and thinking both were perfect for his band. The show @ Forest Hills was great; all the songs sounded like they do on record. And Paul's voice still sounds the same.

cathy i was at that stone pony show in 93. a friend of mine 6'5" tossed me on stage and paul tried to kick me in the head, then called me a farmer. i got thrown out for about 15 minutes and then got back in. i don't know a ton about dave m. but freese has been a solid hired gun for many a band and he delivers. wind up monkey style.

He called you a "farmer"? Is that a compliment or an insult? Or just an observation? Great story, regardless...
