They did play White and Lazy. Wish they had played Wake Up. See that's an alternative on set list Thanks! I went ahead & updated setlist.fm 'cause I'm creepy like that. "Wake Up" would have been awesome indeed. I have still yet to catch "White & Lazy" though... hoping for that, "Take Me Down to the Hospital", "Love You in the Fall" & other surprises in St Paul & Tempe!

Hey guys...a few reflections from a longtime obsessed fan going back to 1982, and this marked my 19th show, including several shows before and including The Shit Hits the Fans shows, as well as 3 Paul solo shows I thought it was damned good, if sort of an odd-to-explain version of glorious mess. Paul stumbled thru the first 5 or 6 songs, flubbing lots of chunks, including several choruses....Most notably on I'll be You. There were a couple of stumbles that almost broke songs down cause Dave can't seem to anticipate/deal with Paul when he veers off course in the same was Slim could. Man do I miss that guy . In some ways Dave is a bit "too good". The funny -- and cool -- thing is that the audience didn't seem to really care about the classic Replacements fuck ups. Somewhere early in the set Paul segued into about 10-15 seconds of "Third Stone from the Sun" which was surprisingly spot on. Things became much tighter about a third of the way thru. Paul's comment about playing in the dark was followed by "I feel like I'm in Romper Room" (something like that) Finally, and here's where I could be just dead wrong. During Can't Hardly Wait there was something that shook me out of fandom and made me think "Whhaaa?!?!? What the hell was that?" and what I think I heard were the horn parts Dickinson famously added to that song's mix. And listening more closely -- and watching Paul and Dave thru the jumbotron, it seemed like there was something not coming out of their guitars that was coming thru the mix. the song just sounded "too polished" compared to the others. I guess I'm just plain wrong here -- or it could be that Dave is so good that he can generate all of those sounds - but it would be interesting to see whether or not someone else (thought they) noticed this. All told, damned fine show. God I miss Slim, probably even more so than Bob...

They did play White and Lazy. That's probably the one hole mentioned. Paul asked the crowd if they wanted to hear Lorde song (referring to Swinging Party). They did not play that one. As mentioned above, they did play Nowhere is my Home.
Before Achin' to Be, he mentioned something about this was something from their regrettable country and western phase. Take Me Down to the Hospital was a bit of a surprise as was Waitress in the Sky. Playing Left of the Dial from down in the gap between the barrier and the stage was another surprise (rest of band up on stage). He turned and faced the stage.
Changed my photo to include one from last night.

Is that "Devil Raised a Good Boy" on the "B" setlist?? I may need to reconsider and sell a kidney (or a kid and find my way to St.Paul or Austin. My memories of Chicago Riot fest are great, but I can't help but think this "might be it"! The shows seem to keep getting better! On a completely different note, am I the only one this board who holds the talents of Paul and Tom Petty in similar regard? Witnessed two Petty shows last week, and I get the same "goosebumps" from T.P. and the Heartbreakers as I do from Paul and Tommy. 2 incredible songwriters...Petty making the obvious sound uncontrived, and Westerberg creating complexity out of the ordinary...both taking universal human nature and making it completely personal to the "masses". I can't help but think both writers labor over every single word they commit to a song, and that they share a respect for each other. I saw the Mats open for Tom at Poplar Creek on the infamous tour, and as much as I will defend the Mats as one of the greatest live experiences in Rock and Roll, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have never failed to completely blow me away with their live set. Granted, two completely different bands with arguably different agendas, but both fully committed to the rock and roll spirit and using music to transcend the daily grind. Just wanted to see if anybody shared a similar opinion, as I am quite used to the "Tom stole the 'rebel without a clue' lyric and the notion that being the opening act for T.P. and the Heartbreakers was the worst thing for the Mats storylines. Two incredibly gifted songwriters I hold in similar esteem...real rock-roll is hard to come by these days...check out The Heartbreakers new album and both of these American treasures live whenever and wherever you can!

Petty making the obvious sound uncontrived To me, that is the nub of the genius of what Tom Petty does...You'll hear one of his songs and think: "Geez, I should've thought of that"...Only you didn't, but he did...Someone somewhere once said: "He can take the same three chords you've heard your entire life, and make something great out of them"...By the way, his new album is pretty good...I think it doesn't hurt that he has a solid band that he's been working with for a long time...You know, I saw one of those Replacements opening for Petty shows, too...And though they did seem pretty bummed, they actually got a pretty decent crowd response...I remember a pretty big reaction to "Answering Machine"...

I'm still smiling after seeing the Mats on Sunday at Bumbershoot.... I also saw them at Shaky Knees in May and have to say Bumbershoot was gnarlier (for lack of a better word)... First off - NO BILLIE JOE! I'm not a huge GD fan... I appreciate the fact that BJA is a big fan but I prefer him not being on-stage as he's a distraction. Paul and Dave handle axe duties just fine - in fact Dave really seemed to be unleashed vs Shaky Knees a couple months ago. I got there an hour early to squeeze up front. The band sounded awesome when they hit the stage - Some great lines from Paul and Tommy as always. When a stupid beach balloon started bouncing around the crowd Tommy said "Hey where's the balloon? I have a KNIFE" Spotted 3 Young Fresh Fellows in the crowd too Highlights for me - "TAKE ME DOWN TO THE HOSPITAL" "Don't Ask Why", "Love You in the Fall", Paul busting out the harmonica ("I'm no Charlie Musselwhite" who also played that day) for WHITE AND LAZY!!!! Never thought I'd see that one live! "Valentine", "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out"... the encore from the photo pit was pretty damn cool. I discovered the Mats in 89 (saw them open for Tom Petty) and saw them in 91 on the All Shook Down tour... I can't believe I've seen them TWICE in 2014 and they certainly are no nostalgia act. Here's hoping new material and more tours come from this reunion. Some quick pics below... Also got to see some great performances from Dream Syndicate, Mission of Burma and Big Star's Third to end the night (everyone was hoping Paul would show up and guest on "September Gurls")... Finished the night in a local dive bar where the Mats blared out of the jukebox (where lots of Mats fans seemed to be).
