"Another Girl, Another Planet" made an appearance last nite. We also got "Nowhere is My Home" & "Psychopharmacology" (but no "White & Lazy" ) so I'm a happy camper. Billie Joe was up there for a significant portion of the set. Paul took lead on some vocals, he took lead on others. "Achin' to Be" was a mess 'cause Billie Joe was lost/confused on lyrics so Paul stepped up to the vocal plate from the couch! Tommy talked to the audience a lot. All in all, a great show. Completely different than the others I've been lucky enough to catch so far so I got more than my money's worth!

It looks like an old Philadelphia Phillies logo from 1927-1932 (alternate logo scroll down on the page in the link): www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/70/Philadelphia_Phillies/Selling sports merchandise with old-time logos on hats and jackets is pretty common (just pointing out that it's probably not a really old jacket).

I'm going to assume that Jeremy BlackLow (writer of the Yahoo.com article) has no idea who the Replacements were or are, and absolutely zero idea of the connection between Mr. Armstrong & the 'mats.
"...he fit in flawlessly with the alt-rock band that returned to playing live last weekend for the first time in 22 years."
"...jammed with the band on some of their biggest hits, including "Alex Chilton," "Can't Hardly Wait," and "Color Me Impressed."'
How well do I not remember rocking out to the 'mats big hits playing on all the top 40 stations...

There is a lot of hostility out there about the BJ thing, and Paul laying on the couch and all that. I can see both sides. I happen to be a Green Day fan, and think BJ is a good fit and I get it, but if it was someone I thought was a douche (as many do of BJ) I'd be pretty bummed.
And I could see the couch thing being schtick, like "we're not into playing that scene, and we're not gonna pretend that we are, damnit..." but I don't think Paul would deny it and say it's back problems if it wasn't (did he say it was back problems? What and from where exactly was said?). He'd be honest. Still though, had I traveled to see a show and that's what I got, I wouldn't leave feeling great.
But...that's always been The Replacements. As matsrule said above, there is no one-typical Replacements set. Like seeing The Pogues back in the day, you get what you get and you know that going in. It doesn't always work in your favor, but when it does, it can be pretty amazing.

You don't let your buddies hold you like this if you have a bad back. Regardless, I would have been psyched to see such a unique show and not felt ripped off in the least that BJA was fronting the band for a good bit of it.

I'm not huge on Green Day, but they certainly have left a legacy on post punk music. If BJA is cool enough for the Mats to invite on stage, then he's cool enough for me. Sounds like a rocking show. If you don't like a curveball every once in a while, maybe the Replacements aren't the band for you!

I think it's awesome, I love Green Day and The Replacements so it's a win/win for me. Billie has always been a huge fan of The Replacements. Green Day has done covers of Bastards of Young and If Only You Were Lonely, his other band Pinhead Gunpowder has covered Achin' To Be and Green Day's alter ego Foxboro Hot Tubs has a song called Highway One where Billie sings the lyric 'give me one good dose of thunder'. Also, if you watch the making of American Idiot documentary you can see a copy of the Im In Trouble 7" lying around and there is even a documentary about the album Dookie featuring an interview with Paul where he says Green Day is a good band and deserve the fame and recognition they've received.
I also remember reading an interview with him where he states that his wife is from Minneapolis and that the fact that she is a huge Replacements fan really signed the deal for him. At least they don't have the dude from Goo Goo Dolls or something up there . .

Message from Paul... Wanna see the Replacements? Get your ass in front of the stage. I'm cool with that.

I'd have thought it was pretty cool for Billie Joe to sit in. (I wasn't a 16-year-old kid in Orange County in the late 80's, so I've never had this whole "sellout" anger towards them.) But if he continued to sing lead on most of the songs while Paul sat on a couch, eh, not so much...Unless of course Paul's back really is acting up again, in which case, o.k....

I live in Oakland, and have seen Billie around. Still haven't gotten to have a conversation with the guy though, but if I did you'd bet I'd talk Replacements (common ground) before other topics. (Side note: you sound like a knowledgable Green Day fan. I went to see Jason White's new band "California" at Bottom of the Hill in SF last month, and I did get to talk to him afterwards. He was very humble and nice, and yes I asked him how he felt about the Mat's reunion. Said it was cool, can't make it to the festival shows and does hope for club tour.)

I'm not a huge GD fan but I do like some of their stuff. They're very successful and BJ is a household name. So, I think it's cool that he played with the Mats for Coachella #2....IF indeed PW had a back issue. I'm thinking it was 100% true. I have thrown my back out and it is very, very painful and restricts what you can do. I play in two bands here in the Detroit area and the closest I came was throwing my back out a couple days before rehearsals. Pain meds plus a bar stool and several breaks were needed to get through it. As for the Mats show, if I was there and understood a back problem limited Westerberg and BJ was truly helping out, I'd been ok with it. If it comes out that it was all Shtick and an act, I'd been a bit pissed (if I paid money to go to Coachella to see them). Under the circumstances, the current lineup is a dream come true! I just want to see those four kickin' it! On the other hand, because of BJ's involvement, the Mats have received a tremendous amount of additional press....and that is all good for them.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...I'm very surprised to hear there is a) any conjecture that Paul's back wasn't really the problem b) anger over BJA playing with the band. Paul has had beack trouble for literally decades at this point - on the 1993 tour, they cancelled at least one show because his back went out. And when he played New Orleans in 2005, my first glimpse of him was outside the venue in the afternoon before the show - he was making his way slowly down the street with a cane. The idea that this is Paul just fucking around with people is uh...dumb.
Are there people who really think he'd willingly go onstage with a cane if it wasn't necessary? That doesn't exactly sound like a dream scenario for a 54 year old man, does it? Whether you like or don't like Green Day or BJA, his love of the Replacements is long-standing and well-documented, they were a huge influence on him from the time he was a kid. Him playing with the band was very likely a way to make the best out of a bad situation and again, whether you like him or not, stepping in on short notice to play with a band you have loved forever had to be a daunting proposition.
I can absolutely understand people being disappointed Paul wasn't able to play the whole show himself, but shit happens and I give them credit for tryign to figure out a way for the show to go on.

On the other hand...... after checking out the videos, it is too bad Paul wasn't 100% healthy. I believe he does like Billy Joe and the intensity level would've been off the charts! Love the suits and ties....friggin awesome! If this version of the Replacements doesn't make it to smaller venues it would be a shame... I can't begin to imagine how powerful those tunes with this lineup would be indoors.....with mostly Mats fans screaming out the lyrics... fun stuff to think about.

In 1993, I was in college and drove 90 miles to see Paul Westerberg . . . and turned around and drove back because the show was cancelled because he had back problems. This was maybe December or possibly late November of that year.
This was pre-internet days when there would have been no way of getting the word out. I had a brief moment where I couldn't believe how good of a parking spot I had gotten so close to the venue. Then, I saw people walking up to the door and then turning around and walking away and the moment was gone.
This would have been at the same venue that had the 1987 show that inspired the song "Portland" and the scrawl on the vinyl record "Portland, we're sorry" (although I had no idea about any of that at the time in 1993).
Yes, I can confirm a show cancelled because of back problems in 1993.
