I'm way out of the loop on these kinda things, but didn't Coachella sorta start off as a kinda hip alternative thing? I don't know...I see people like Beyonce and Gwen Stefani performing...Doesn't seem too cutting edge...

I don't know...I see people like Beyonce and Gwen Stefani performing...Doesn't seem too cutting edge... Yep. It started as something different back in '99 when Goldenvoice wasn't the devil yet (i.e. before they were consumed by AEG). It kept its cred for the first few years but it has been a corporate sell out mess since about 2003, in my humble opinion. There are just too many festivals these days & they all blur into one mess of frustration as a fan of live music. But hell, I'll take the 'Mats at festivals over no 'Mats at all.

Ah...Ok I'm (semi) recovered....what a show.
First of all, I told myself i wasn't going to take too many pictures and/or focus too much on setlist and just enjoy myself, so some of my memory may be a little hazy.
Broken Bells performed on the same stage right before the 'Mats, so as soon as they were done i pushed forward as the crowd dispersed. It was great/kind of depressing how easily i was able to get right up front. I was right behind the folks up against the barricade.
When they took the stage I couldn't believe how good they looked. I saw Paul a couple times in '04 and i swear he looked better now. The suit and bowtie were a nice touch. He walked out...got on one knee....pulled some flowers from his cuff and threw them in the crowd.
"There's been some good music today huh? Well we're about to put a fucking end to that."
The setlist going around is pretty accurate. The first half of the set was mostly Twin/Tone stuff. When the opening riff of 'Nowhere is My Home" started ("This goes out to anybody that became and American Citizen in the last......hour or so") it took me a second to recognize it just because it was so unexpected. Definitely a highlight, though i didn't see anybody near me singing along.
"Would you rather hear 'I'll Be You' or 'Psychopharmacology'" I laughed at that, and laughed even harder when they actually played the latter. 'White and Lazy' was also a pretty unexpected choice....never heard Paul blow the harp like that.
The only adjustment I remember in the setlist is that they played Psychopharmacology after 'Love You Till Friday /Maybelline'. That left probably the four best songs ever played in succession, "Left of the Dial" "Alex Chilton" "Can't Hardly Wait" "Bastards of Young."
I honestly teared up a couple times during the final four songs....I couldn't believe i was finally seeing the band that changed my life.
Some other random notes:
- When the reviewers say the band "struggled" through the performance, they're probably talking mostly about Androgenous...it was delightfully sloppy and Paul fumbled the words quite a bit - At one point Paul took his cufflinks off and used his guitar like a baseball bat to hit them into the crowd. - About halfway through the set, Dave Minehan drew flowers from his cuff as well. I ended up with them thanks to a nice lady that had also snagged a cufflink - A few people i know that had seen them "back in the day" said this was probably the most together they've ever seen them. - Somebody i know ran into Tommy about 5 mins before show time. My friend said "Wow. It's really happening huh?" and Tommy (quite drunk apparently) said "There's still time for it to come crashing down"
I think that's it?

Thanks for the review & the reaffirmation that it was a great show & not the lackluster performance that reviewers keep making it out to be. I've heard nothing but good things from ALL the actual 'Mats fans I knew in attendance. It's amazing that these reviewers don't seem to be doing a moment's research before submitting these articles. Oh wells... we all know better! & good on you for not getting distracted with the photo taking & such... I did the same in Denver/Chicago & don't have a single regret. Getting lost in the moment > photos & details later. Anyone going next weekend? I'm breaking down & looking for someone to sell my their pass for just Friday... or a pass at face or below that I can unload onto someone else after Friday. Thought I was gonna be able to not see them at Coachella... but that damn suit, bow tie, the silliness, & the song choices are now making me think otherwise!

The recording has surfaced (2 sources). Sounds like the band was in good form. Paul sounds drunk, especially early on. Nice tidbits here and there, like when he says "South Carolina" near the end of LOTD. Nowhere is My Home is a great addition to the set, but the solo needs work. Psychopharmacology was cool too. Freese is such a good drummer.

I knew those reviews were BS.......
I half talked myself in going Friday and then saw what we would have to pay....
Considering I would only go Friday and just to see the MATS it seems a bit ridiculous money wise.......
Can't believe that just came out of my fingers...........

If they sold one day passes, I would be there like white on rice. Go, see The Replacements, drag myself home. The tickets are so damn expensive! I went on Stub Hub and shed a single tear...

I've watched that clip of "Takin' A Ride" about five times now...There a lotta cool things about this...I think it's cool that they would open a show over thirty years later with the first song off their first album...I think it's cool that Tommy still looks like a kid...Paul sounds as punk as ever...Josh Freese nails the shit outta that drum part...It's pretty much what we always hoped for from them at anytime...Gloriously loose and ragged, but maybe a lot tighter than most people could be...Fuck...Those fuckers...That brought tears to my ears...I'm assuming this was via somebody's phone...I imagine it was pretty incredible in person...I'm good...That clip...If Paul and Tommy and the Replacements name are permanently retired after that, I'm good...

Access TV (whatever that is) is supposed to be broadcasting all the performances starting April 18.

Just looked at the AXS schedule posted on their site and it looks like they will NOT have the Replacements set. Here we go again.

Do recall some discussion last year of a director filming the Riot Fest performances, Go Pro cams on stage etc. - and in the clip of Alex Chilton below, there is a cameraman capturing Tommy's every move (far left): Perhaps this is all groundwork for a dvd release?

Great - lossy versions of the lossless ones posted on dime the day before. It's like destroying the master tape and circulating 10th generation recordings. As great an idea as the CMI blog is - if you can't do it lossless you shouldn't do it.
