I have no idea. I've been watching the auction with thoughts of bidding on it if it didn't go too crazy high (it's currently over 300.00). I've got tons of outtakes and rarities but this one is totally unknown to me. (At first glance I thought it might be a cover of the Elvis Costello song, then I remembered that it's the name of one of his albums but not a song title though he does sing the line in the song Brilliant Mistake from the KOA album.)
I think it's out of my price range now. After flying to both the Denver and Chicago shows and buying one of the signed Songs for Slim EPs, I think I may have completely maxed out my Mats budget for 2013. We should all chip in a couple of bucks each to win the auction and share out the song. I'd be so on board with that.

IIRC "King of America" does indeed date from the Eventually era. I vaguley recall some discussion that it might be an early version of "Century."

in an interview for that era paul talks about it bieng a song he really liked, but that didn't quite make the cut. he also mentioned that it was "out there" floating around for people to find. i never knew it had actually made it out via a promo. surprised it has not surfaced, as surely someone has it!...although i've felt the same way about teh ROUGH MIXES for dont tella soul, paul has said they are out there, and damnit i wanna here em! I was really dissappointed the re-issues didnt have it as a bonus disc...

sounds like we've got the groundwork for a scavenger hunt! we'll all go out hunting down those recordings that are floating around out there and then meet up for a listening party

I always thought Paul had an unrealistic picture of what was actually "out there" for us to hear. He's mentioned a bunch of stuff over the years that definitely isn't out there. Cheyenne is another song title that comes to mind.

yeah, but as far as I know, songs like Cheyenne and Two Drops in the Rain have never been bootlegged from the Eventually sessions. I get the feeling he's talking more about the Mats material being out there. ??

Damn! I'd like to bid on it, but I already have a bid on Ian Curtis' kitchen table.

went to a huge Mats fan in Brooklyn
"Clearly younger PW. Used by the system, now it's his turn to be King of America. Not a hard rocker but peppy."

Still haven't heard it, but pieced together a more few bits of evidence of this song -confirms what Bronxteacher suggested (that it is an early version of "Century" if you look, "king of america" is listed on this setlist from 1996 - found this at :http://theskyway.com/issues/043oct2496.txt ------------------ SEPTEMBER 13TH, 1996: THE FILLMORE - SAN FRANCISCO, CA Waiting for Somebody World Class Fad Valentine These are the Days Kiss Me on the Bus Century Angels Walk Love Untold Ain't Got Me King of America !!!! I Will Dare Once Around the Weekend They're Blind Achin' to Be Can't Hardly Wait Merry Go Round Talent Show/ Send in the Clowns If Only You were Lonely Nobody (acoustic) !!!!! Black Eyed Susan Skyway Waitress in the Sky Swingin Party I'm in Trouble Customer 1st encore: Alex Chilton Left of the Dial 2nd encore: Never Mind "Black Eyed Susan" was a very nice little surprise. As was "King of America" -- before the song he said, "Here's a song that got wasted somewhere..." It's a great song! I wish they kept it on the album. ------------------ and then it looks like someone made a bootleg of the show: www.colormeimpressed.com/covers/paul_1996-09-13a.jpgNotice that where "king of america" is listed on the setlist, "century" is printed on the bootleg.

wow, that's amazing that it's an earlier version of Century....and I love the song title, too. Coming from anyone else, it would seem schmaltzy, but somehow the title seems fitting for a Paul song. The title evokes a similar feeling I get when I think of Best Thing That Never Happened.

The set list from the Fillmore show seems to indicate that "King of America" is NOT related to "Century." Why are both songs listed? And why did Paul introduce "King" as a song "that got wasted somewhere?"
