folks: bunch of us driving in from Buffalo on day of the show. i happen to have a buddy of mine who lives a 20 minute walk from venue, so i'm lucky to have a place to crash afterward (though, just found out, might have an early morning to get back to B-lo for work, that i can't get out of -- no rest for the weary, i guess, so i'll worry about that later.)
many of us from the 716 have VIP tickets. not sure how we'll all say hello, and not sure yet what exactly i'll be wearing. potentially a bright yellow Little League World Series Western Division t-shirt I just picked up. either that, or a ratty Drive-By Truckers t-shirt.
either way, the Buffalo crew won't be hard to miss. we'll be the loud ones.
and while i understand some folks feelings about not wanting to go to this thing, i've seen them twice and i can't wait. i won't be making comparisons with what they were like the last time i saw them some 22 years ago (my favorite show of all back at the 86th Street in Vancouver). there's no point in doing that. in fact, i have no expectations going in to think this is going to be a "great" show or a "dreadful" one.
the reason i'm going is to see "my boys" -- ok, 2 of my boys -- back where they belong together on stage, playing songs that still mean something and very much resonate to this day.
i'm a fan. and i'm not a fan of very much. but the 'mats meant and still mean very much to me. in some ways their songs, their spirit, their crooked phrases and desperation and their ability to thumb their nose at the establishment at every turn have helped shape my perspective all these years later.
accuse me of romanticizing. i'll say this, it's not often you get to feel 24 again at this ripe age of mine.
seeing them is an opportunity, a milepost, perhaps of how far i've come, and a good reminder of who i was, and what i still believe in.
see ya all at the goddam talent show.

seeing them is an opportunity, a milepost, perhaps of how far i've come, and a good reminder of who i was, and what i still believe in. This is exactly how I feel about Sunday. Your entire post was perfect, but this passage was most perfect. My son Jack and I won't be VIP because he's only 14, don't know what we're wearing but he'll probably have long sleeves and long pants (we're hoping it's a phase) so feel free to say Hi from the 716!

Wiser: I think I read that they just opened VIP up to all ages.
Okay, we need someone to make an executive decision on where to meet up tomorrow night and what time. We can post that initial info here. Then if we move on to another bar, I have all of the email addresses sent to me and will do my best to send out a group email/text (provided I can get Wifi or have time to buy a Canada sim card) with the details. I'll do the same the next day at the show so we can hopefully find each other in VIP.

Greetings from Toronto, Mats fans. For those of you who would like a few suggestions for bars within walking distance from Fort York, I can list a few. These are all really close, not too trendy and, well, very close. Check 'em on yelp or google, they're good;
Done right inn: no bull, a good drinking hole. Patio out back. Squirley's: same as above, but more of a dive bar.. but with a heart.Patio out back. The wheat sheaf: Bigger, almost as old as fort York, maybe older..anyway, a little more sports/jock but a good patio and the closest to the show..you could practically throw a rock at the venue from the deck..well, kinda..
None are possibly what you might seek as a tourist but little to no attitude if you just want to drink. Stay off the domestic beers(Molsons, Labatt, etc) There are so many good microbrews here!
Enjoy the show!

Sorry for not updating. Internet is spotty. A couple of us will be at McCools near the convention center. 310 Front West. We should be there by 9. I'm wearing a Mats shirt.

It was great hanging out tonight with a bunch of the MWT regulars. It was unanimously decided that we would meet up tomorrow at 1:30 in the lobby of the Renaissance Hotel and walk over to the show together. All of you who couldn't make it tonight are welcome to join us.
