What often never gets discussed is this:
Paul Westerberg is a master song writer.
Im watching Color Me Obsessed. You get the usual stories over and over and how the band was able to connect this and that and how it felt like "hey i coul start a band too!" "i look like them!" "They dont play that many chords!"...
Thats all fine and dandy but in the end - Doing what Paul Westerberg does is not something that anybody can do. His ear for melody, the way he turns lyrics on their heads, how to structure songs, how to turn a simple 3 chord song into a multi-layered musical orgasm is something that some people are just born with.
He's got it.
That is huge.
Great documentary though. Fun to watch.
I love music

What often never gets discussed is this: Paul Westerberg is a master song writer. I had a brief discussion with Steve Vai (of all people) after one of his shows and he agreed that PW is an American treasure. Actual musicians know who has the goods.

His ear for melody, the way he turns lyrics on their heads, how to structure songs, how to turn a simple 3 chord song into a multi-layered musical orgasm is something that some people are just born with. He's got it. I agree....I was actually starting to get a little annoyed at the notion that "anybody can do it" in the documentary. Or that the Mats weren't technically good blah blah blah.... On the DIY approach, yeah, anyone can make sounds. That's not the hard part. Like you said, it's takes some kind of innate talent to hear melodies in your head and get them out, to turn phrases around....and the other thing is, there are plenty of Mats songs that are NOT simple, I IV V, 3 chord rock. AND Paul is not just a garage guy, he may have started out just thrashing around in the beginning, but the Man educated himself on his craft to further his talent. In his own words: Q: How did you go about developing your writing skills?
A: I did it all. I listened. I studied. I read books about chord progressions. I would take another person's song and learn it, put my own words to it and then change three chords. I've done everything from Tin Pan Alley thievery to sitting in the dark waiting for inspiration. articles.latimes.com/1993-06-06/entertainment/ca-160_1_paul-westerberg
