Has anyone ever heard/read mention of Paul helping Tommy out with the songs on "Friday Night Is Killing Me"?
I was listening to it last night, and the songwriting is so sophisticated for a first-time effort...while seeming so much more advanced than any of the Perfect stuff or solo stuff Tommy did later.
No disrespect to Tommy at all, but I can't help but wonder if Paul didn't do his comrade at arms a big solid and help him at least revise/refine the stuff Tommy may have already had worked up.

Actually I have. I knew a couple guys who were hanging out with Tommy quite a bit during that time. Tommy told them that Paul basically helped him "finish" most of the songs on the record. I didn't get to deep into the details, but I took this to mean that they were Tommy's songs but needed some tweaking to various degrees with arrangements, bridges, ends, etc.

Still love that record. I'm pretty sure Tommy wrote a bit for the Mats but it maybe went unused. "Satellite"?

Paul played and sang backup on the album too. I know he played guitar on the title track, and you can hear his voice pretty clearly on the fadeout.

Tommy was writing a lot of songs those last few years the mats were together, so I wouldn't be surprised if he asked Paul for help on certain things. But I disagree with the premise that those are his best efforts. Village Gorilla Head is his best overall album IMO.

I think that "Friday Night..." has Tommy's best songwriting and has always been my favorite release of his and Making Me Sick (also BnP) is a stellar song. I do think Tommy has broadened the style and substance of his songs in many ways across subsequent releases but to me has never really honed in on the feel and charm of those BnP songs. I always assumed it was more osmosis in the songwriting than Tommy and Paul working directly on finishing any of those songs. It's always been wishful thinking on my part that Tommy and Paul had a close and strong friendship and musical partnership, as I never really got that sense from anything I had read or heard. Perhaps it was. I'd love to hear all the honest details of the Mats years someday.

Well I know Mile Campbell of TP and the heartbreakers played guitar lead on the title track. Pretty unmistakable. Paul played guitar on 'loose ends' as it was part of a short rolling stone article at the time. Tommy played most of everything other than drums, with some exceptions. And and as far as that record seeming maybe more developed as was mentioned above. As the rock n roll tale goes: 'you spend your whole life writing your first record and six months writing the next'... A great record!

VGH to me is spotty and often over-thought, with a few moments of greatness. The Perfect stuff is great, love it, but seems like focus was more on style/energy than writing great songs - nothing wrong with that, and there are still some great Perfect songs, but overall not as great as the best stuff on FNIKM & OMM. On those 2 he seemed more comfortable to me and the results were more focused and consistent.

Village Gorilla Head is his best overall album IMO. couldn't disagree more. i really like vgh, but the middle of it drags it down bigtime. there are 3 or 4 songs in the middle that i cannot bother to listen to. i've tried. it starts & ends very strong. i think the first & last tracks are among my favorite songs of all time by a replacement (or anyone else for that matter). all that said, fnikm to my ears is the best, the best post mats record front to back. it is well-produced, sequenced, etc. if i have any complaint at all is that tommy's voice very occasionally can get "screechy". small complaint, and one that i always overlook when i listen. if paul helped out, well, that makes sense, but it doesn't really affect my feeling about it one way or the other; save for it makes me yearn for more paul/tommy collaborations in the future. and, yes, i said fnikm is the best post mats record in my opinion.
