The new album from long time 'Mats freaks Deer Tick, Divine Providence, concludes with a "hidden track" - a cover of Grandpaboy's "Mr. Cigarette" (from "Grandpaboy's Last Stand"). Gotta be the most obscure Westy cover ever.

Paul is a Deer Tick fan? Color me skeptical about that headline. And out of all the songs he's written, why would he want anyone to cover a song he probably doesn't get any royalties for?

Royalties are still owed even if it is unlisted on the album...and Paul still does own the copyright even though the only version he's released has been part of "Grandpaboy's Last Stand".

McCauley is most definitely a huge Westerberg fan. He covered "Portland" for the Middle Brother album & has done a bunch of other mats covers in his shows. (waitress in the sky: www.nyctaper.com/?p=6882)My hunch is that Deer Tick reached out to Paul about Mr. Cigarette and he said yes... not quite that he "wrote it for Deer Tick" as much as he wrote it and let them record their version of it.

heres what their manager told me: 'ha.good question.i think that will always remain a bit of a mystery.the song was given to john mcCauley by pauls manager, john was told that paul wrote it for him, however the truth to that statement will likely always remain nebulous' next time i go to darren hills shop i'll have to ask him about it if hes around!

heh. how cool would that be if one of your idols wrote a song just for you? I'd be beyond giddy.

No, nothing to do with the hidden track status. I was thinking that royalties might not be owed since Paul didn't actually write the music, just the lyrics. But I don't really know much about how the whole cover song royalties thing works, so I could be wrong.

i think its pretty hazy as to who even wrote i've been working on the railroad...i don't know if theres even anyone or their families who would get royalties for the music.

Yeah, I figured it would be in public domain, which is why Paul wouldn't have had to pay any royalties on it himself.

Aha! Paul caught red-handed listening to contemporary music! He probably hasn't owned up to listening to new music since the Mats split. It's somehow nice to know that he's still got his ear to the ground. In an REM tribute on Salon today Bob Mould wrote that great musicians are always great music fans.
I do find it kind of funny that this was the song he handed them though. It could be taken as a backhanded compliment. "Here, I wrote this just for you. It's...uh...um, I've Been Working on the Railroad. Ok, ok, so I didn't really write it, but it's got some new lyrics. If you don't like this, I've got another one that's...uh, well it's La Bamba, but...well, you get the idea."
