it kills me to know that he re-records over stuff that he feels are throwaways. Why not give them to Darren and have him pick stuff out for sale online to the fans?
he's such a talented songwriter with such a gift, that it's kind of shame he's thinking of a boxed set. aren't boxed sets kind of like an end point for someone's career?
I guess it was inevitable that he's turning himself into a Jimmy Webb type of guy and backing away from performing and letting others do his songs. Hell, at least do some basement music videos so the fans can hear and see you again....

I'll put my money on the box set being titled Final Hurrah. And I have to wonder who he thinks would put out a Paul Westerberg box set these days? I could see him releasing a batch of old stuff online, but an actual box set seems unlikely in this day and age.

All over bar the shouting, it's a waste of time, as written by P.W. himself in '87. I would hate to see the Replacements reform because that time has passed and can never be captured again. Leave it be. Right on. But Paul's comments regarding creating new stuff has me disappointed. I'm hoping that Johnny gets into music and bugs the old man to tour again. But how long do we want to ache and speculate for something that ain't never, nor should happen? The last thing the Replacements, if they "reformed" could do, is destroy our myth and our perception of their legacy. It's best left alone and let's enjoy what we've got.

What Rolling Stone should have done was flown Paul, Tommy, Chris & Slim to a an undisclosed place, each unaware that the other was going to be there for the interview. Tell them its going to be a two part interview. One in the afternoon and one at night.
Set them up with grub and drinks. Have the guys meet at an unknown rehearsal space full of instruments for the second FAKE interview and see if the guys bite and play some songs with the cameras rolling!
What stuck out to me from the article was the fact that Paul and Chris get together a few times a year and jam out. I had no idea they were even friends. Thats actually very cool.
I didn't really take the RS article as depressing. Hell anytime they get some ink is cool with me. I do like the idea of forming a new band with new songs.

I doubt if a reunion ever occurs. What's really sad is the fact that Paul isn't realeasing any new music. I know he felt he had to go away for awhile to be appreciated again but it sounds like he's over with it once and for all.

that was paul and tommy jamming for time to time, not chris. chris hates his drums, and does not really talk about the amts at all. he really has moved on and forged his own life, which i think is great!

I always get the feeling that the answers you get out of Paul change solely on when you ask them. He doesn't really have "company" answers, and he doesn't work in catch phrases and soundbytes. If he's feeling like he doesn't want to put anything out anymore on that day, then that's what he says in that interview. If you ask him the next day, he may want to that day. I also think that Paul needles people (i.e. the "Tommy needs the gig" crack) just to amuse himself.

fcmonk, i agree. you n ever really know what paul's going to say, and it can make for a confusing interview. mostly on our end. it seems odd the interview was even done frankly. Do a feature on tommy's record, you dont need to involve paul, or drag up the idea of a reunion.

He gives conflicting answers day to day, but if he says he's not writing or doing anything musical apart from picking up a saxophone at some point last year, then I tend to believe him. It's not like there's any evidence to contradict him. He's not going to give an interview tomorrow and say that he's been hammering out new songs for the past couple years and has a double album on the way.
If cashing in on a Replacements reunion is the only thing that gets him out of the house, then I'm all for it. I don’t think they can really do any damage to the Replacements legacy, whatever that is. I'm starting to think that the ideal reunion would be Paul joining Tommy's band as a guitar player. They could play Satellite and that would be the extent of the Mats portion of the show.

I'd love to see them get together and get all they should have gotten the first time around, but, somehow, that wouldn't be the right ending to the Replacements' story, would it? Hey, Rolling Stone, you want a Mats reunion...get them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...I'm sure that would be a start.

Hey adamapple this the line from the article. I took it as Paul and Chris were jamming together a few times a year.
"I don't think Chris would ever go out and tour. I met with him last year a couple of times just for fun."

Do PW's RS comments put his recent output in a different light? Should we now assume that very few of the download releases had new songs (5:05 being one exception)? What's the worst case scenario for when this cessation of songwriting started?

I'm right there with all of you who found this a bit depressing. I'm not so much bummed that there probably won't be a 'Mats reunion. If that were to happen it would be best if it were totally unplanned-- like if by sheer coincidence Paul and Tommy and Chris all walked into the same bar or bookstore or restaurant at the same time and said in unison, "Let's jam!".
But Paul's statement about not playing much-- shit!-- I get to feeling like I'm slacking if I don't play for a few days and I ain't no Paul Westerberg! And ok, the dadaist thing about writing then tossing songs is clever but that would be like an aging Rembrandt saying, "I get a kick out of burning my painting as soon as they're dry". C'mon, C'mon, C'mon, PAUL!! AUGHH!!
Ok, sorry, I'm cool now.
The box set was the only Glimmer of Light in the article. I'm all for that as long as it's long on unreleased material and yes, Squaw, a t-shirt would be cool!

true---sometimes you have to take what he says with a grain of salt. so i'm hoping his comments of "Why bother?" is just him talking off the top of his head without really meaning it. but somehow, I get the feeling that he's pretty much done with live appearances. apart, that is, from some spontaneous thing he might do.
as for the box set, i'd at least want to hear "Cheyenne" and "Two Drops In the Rain" (or is it Tear Drops in the Rain? I can't remember the exact title) that he left off of "Eventually".

Every time I read something about Paul "taping over songs" and "throwing stuff out", I think about those two versions of "Crackle & Drag"...I really love both of those, but I could easily imagine him picking just one and the other version just being lost forever...

Let's not forget Son of a Depression. That was a year ago, almost, when that was announced. We have yet to hear anything else about it. And if we ever do get to hear it, we already know it's at least a year old. Bummer.

Kinda starting to feel that this is like when you break up with someone you really loved, by their choice, and you spend the next five years (or ten, or twenty) looking for little signs that maybe there's a chance you might get back together someday...When all along, you'd have been better off just accepting reality, and trying to move on with your own life...There's a whole world of music new and old out there that I've never really heard (lotta fish in the sea), so maybe I'll start putting more effort into looking into that, and stop worrying so much about what the ex is up to...

Maybe Paul gave the interview and entertained discussion about a reunion mostly (if not solely) to get more press coverage and attention for Tommy's new record. He downplayed the possibility of any new material from himself (only that he was working on a box set, which means that it could be released years from now, or never), in order to not steal the spotlight from Tommy.
Now that school's going to be back in session maybe Paul will have his days freed up for songwriting again.
