A new ABC-TV show debuts tonight called "Happy Town." It's set in Minnesota. Any connection to the 'Mats? At first only thing I found is that it's a "replacement" show. But there are a couple clues that the show's title might not be just a happy accident. Creator Josh Appelbaum was behind a 2008 show called "How to Kiss Hello" that used "Love Untold." And in an interview he says "Beautiful Girls" (filmed in Minneapolis) is one of his favorite movies.

I would guess its only a matter of time before "Happy Town" the song is played.. Last night they used Elvis Costello and Crosby,Stills&Nash.. The Replacments can't be far behind! CF

Another MPLS media outlet weighs in on the show. I emailed the writer to ask if he'd run across any Mats link. He wrote back: "That's a good connection, but I haven't seen anything about it--but it's a shame they didn't use the song for the show. Some of the music on the show is pretty lame."

Never trust someone named, 'Tad", or his opinion of music, either. :-)

Beautiful Girls is a pretty damn good movie.
"Ice Cold Martinis and Van Morrison", or is the other way around?

watched the debut last week, and found it pretty lame. the characters are as broad as can be, but without the wit of the cohen brothers.
it's not a terrible show, and the premise seems good, but i found myself rolling my eyes at the characters for the entire show.

Lately ABC has been on a roll with me. I've never been into more than one series at a time but suddenly I'm DVR'ing Lost, Flash Forward, and V. Not sure if I can bring myself to get into this one. Perhaphs if a certain Minnesotan were to make a guest appearance crooning "Happytown" in the local bookstore I might change my mind.

That possibility is pretty much the only reason I am tuning in..Inspite of the deep, dark mystery they still find a way to work in a couple of breezy rock tunes each week... Last night it was Kaiser Chiefs, "Never Miss a Beat," followed by a couple of weird scenes featuring Carly Simon's "Your So Vain." I could see "Happy Town" being used in a key episode, such as the finale, perhaps. CF

I had nothing better to do so I tuned in to what is reported to be the final episode of this thing for a few weeks (it resumes in June).. They continue to maintain the same musical format -- dark, gloomy themes with occasional tension breakers of breezy alt-rock..Last night we were treated to segments of The EEls and Magic Wands, "Teenage Love." I still think they gotta run the Replacements song in the finale...I read there are five more episodes of Happy Town, and its gone for good.

I don't know why I continue to keep this thread alive... The possibility of hearing the Replacements song may be slipping with every episode.. Anyway, the series has resumed for the next few weeks. The music format continues, but this week they shifted gears a little bit...Intead of the 'happy' music they were inserting to break the tension this week they used Jeanne Newhall's sorta dismal tune, "6th Avenue Heartache." As the show gets creepier and creepier I guess they are finding it hard to use the lighter songs.

Ok...just a few more weeks of this show.. I think they are getting to the point where they almost have to use the "Happy Town" song. Last night they used Simon and Garfunkel's "My Little Town." The show has an evil villian called "magic man" so some fans were expecting the Heart song. I expect they would have liked to use it.. Instead they used Austin's Omar and the Howler's "Magic Man" which is a Bo Diddly-type rip off and nothing like the well known classic. Maybe next week I'll watch again, but the show is really not that great.

I finally found the info I was looking for over on the abc website.. I don't know if this has been out there all along but it does state that the Replacements' "Happy Town" song was slated to appear in an episode: abc.go.com/site/music-lounge/happy-town-playlist?ThemeGallery=437988&playlistId=&clipId=Unfortunately, we will probably never hear it because it says it was scheduled for "Season Two". My understanding is that there will not be a season two due to cancelation. Anyway, last night they continued the musical themes. They played the Rolling Stones' "Hand of Fate" and "Spirit Gone" by John Fogerty's kid's band Steamtrain Mary, who, to my knowledge do not even have a record deal. Music appears to be very important to this show. Two key characters spent an unusual amount of time discussing the merits of Bon Jovi...not sure what that is all about. CF
