It's been 25 years since "Let It Be" was released. I can remember buying it when it came out. Lord I'm getting old. Anyway, some local Twin Cities musicians have put together a 'Mats tribute to celebrate the anniversary (plus the paperback release of Jim Walsh's book) and will be performing at First Ave. this Friday November 27th. Bring your kids, it's an 18+ show! Details at: www.first-avenue.com/event/3794If you get tix now it's only $6!

stayed home ... but here's a FB photo from a friend ... and this is jeremy messersmith doing "unsatisfied" (looks a bit like Adam Levy from the Honeydogs who was also there?) some play by play via twitter from @gimme_noise, @howwastheshow and @strategy_samba There seems to have been a Let It Be cover-art board there with the faces cut out for fun fotos. Here's a video, Dale T. Nelson doing Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out

i had every intention of going to that thing, but i didn't realize it was the day after thanksgiving (i know, get a calendar, stupid) until it was too late. didn't get back from nisswa, mn on friday until the show was already in full swing.
sounds like it was fun. i watched the videos for high on stress's set, and they did some great darkhorse covers.

Me and my friends drove 4 + hours to go to this, and it was awsome. I wasn't even born when Let It Be came out, but to me, it's the greatest damn album ever made. Curtiss A came onstage and played 'Favorite Thing' and Jim Walsh came onstage and sang 'Kiss Me on The Buss (Butt)' and 'Waitress In The Sky'.

I really wasn't planning on going but my old roommate called me up and talked me into it so I ended up going with him and his 19 year old son.
We ended up bouncing back and forth between the main room and the Entry until the main room started really filling up at about 11. Tribute shows can be hit or miss as bands wrestle with the conundrum of trying to faithfully reproduce the songs or re-interpret them. The last band before the Let It Be tribute began took the reinterpretation thing to the extreme, doing Depeche Mode-style covers of several 'Mats songs.
And one of the bands in the Entry didn't even do any Replacements songs, they covered Steely Dan and Patti Smith songs. I think they were called the Pocket Assassins and were a three piece with a phenomenal guitar player.
Highlights for me were St.Dominic's Trio's cover of "Portland" which was nice to hear live and Eliza Blue's bluegrassy cover of "Here Comes a Regular" which gave it a fresh twist by changing the melody just a little bit.
The Let It Be house band was great. The bass player reminded me of Joan Jett. She and one of the guitarists are in the Melismatics, I'll have to check them out. I liked that they did the piano bit in "We're Comin' Out" and they even tried to do the recorded phone message "If you need help..." part from "Answering Machine" but it didn't quite work. The vocalists were solid, the woman who sang "Androgynous" was a personal favorite even if she messed up the words at the end. She had style.
It sounds like they'll do it again next year with a tribute to "Tim".

I thought the footage of the Mats playing at the Entry that they showed between acts on the big screen was awsome. The big wooden Let It Be cover with the faces cut out was really cool too.

Reminds me of a show that Tributasaurus did back in Nov 2006 when they "became" The Replacements. They're a local Chicago band that transforms into a different band each month for a night or two of concerts. No costumes or other getup, just spot-on musicianship. Anyhow, their 'mats show included Androgynous with piano and the recorded phone parts for Answering Machine. If you ever get a chance to see them, don't pass it up. www.tributosaurus.com

I agree on both points, I wonder what they're going to do with that Let It Be cover. The early footage of the 'Mats in the Entry is available on the Twin Tone site at www.twintone.com/video/mats/Edit: Check that, it looks like the video won't load so it may not be available there. How frustrating, the footage is great.

THE MPLS paper says today a Tim tribute night at First Ave next year is a sure bet.

And says "The band are" instead of "The band is." I'd like to see the linguistic map for that one.
