Is there a timeline of what guitars, amps, effects, speakers, pick ups, tubes, etc.that PW has used thru the years? Bob & Slim as well? Does anyone have any info? This may have been covered before but my searches haven't turned up anything.
Also are there any musicians on this board who feel their set up captures the Mats/PW tone?
If you were going to take the stage as a Mats tribute band what would your set up be?

I remember reading an interview with Paul in the Washington Post many years ago where he hated talking guitar tech stuff. When asked about his guitars he gave t he impression he didn't care much for that kind of question and just responded with, "It's a big, red one."
But it seems as if he uses various guitars in concerts, from Strat types to Les Paul Juniors. I think his acoustics tend to be Taylors?

I think Paul is into all that kind of stuff.. judging from what appears to be a vast collection of guitars and assorted gear. However, I'm convinced he'd rather talk about other things around fans and reporters. Most people, I think, reserve their "shop talk" for people they consider their peers. And his acoustics run the gamut.. I've seen him play Taylors, Gibsons, and a 12 string Guild I wish I had. CF

Okay, this is from Musician mag, July 1987. Not the one with the Mats on the cover, but the one with the Bill Flanagan feauture, "The Real Replacements." The sidebar story had a few tidbits about their gear: PW - "I got a '56 Les Paul, my trusty gray guitar -- and I've got a plexiglas Dan Armstrong, I think it's a '71. I've got a Yamaha acoustic."
Tommy - " I don't know, it's been so repaired... It's a sort of Fender, part Rickenbacker. Say it's 'hand-customized.'"
Slim - '61 Telecaster neck on a 1970 Tele body
Chris - "Sears drums -- that's all I can say."

More interesting stuff from this sidebar: "For keyboards Paul claims to have 'a little Shittone, made exclusively by Shittone Incorporated.' " "What kind of bass is that, Tommy? 'I don't know, it's been so repaired... It's a sort of Fender, part Rickenbacker. Say it's 'hand-customized' " "Paul says we should play it safe and say Tommy plays through an Ampeg amp, but that would be a lie. 'It's yellow and orange and big.' Tommy explains like a true technowiz. 'It's a square thing with a bunch of tubes You come over and try to describe it!' So we did and it was a big yellow and orange thing with a bunch of tubes." "Slim is a Fender Loyalist" "Chris Mars says, 'Sears drums- that's all I can say.' "

I think PW made a statement on this topic when he took the 80 buck First Act that he bought at a Walmart on stage. Its just wires and wood.
And why do people refer to a man's package as "junk". I prefer to think of mine as treasure.
