Which Westerberg/Replacements song sounds most unusual/outside of the box/unique to you?
For me it would be the alternate version of "All Shook Down" from ALL FOR NOTHING. It's also one of my favorites and the only one I can think of that uses an ocarina on it. Very cool.

I never quite knew where "Angels Walk" came from.

For outside the box, I'd have to go with "If Only You Were Lonely". This isn't to say that the song isn't reminiscent of many replacements songs, but the songs you would compare it to were all much later in their career. At the time when paul recorded this, and released it as a B-side, it was a complete outside the box thing for the 'mats. I have to give it credit for that, and it helps that it's one of my favorite mats songs.

I remeber thinking WTF is up with the flute (or recorder) in All Shook Down when that album came out. Now, however, I'm used to it and like how it works. But then, I didn't know what to think.
Same sorta goes for Within Your Reach. The synth drumbeat was weird for me at first. It's such a good song though that I was quickly sold on it. Also, I couldn't help but wonder at the time what the hell the other 'mats thought of it.

I'm almost certain the flute/recorder sounding instrument on All Shook Down is a small fist shaped wind instrument called an ocarina. I was given one by a friend and it sounds just like what you hear on ASD.

I remember being a bit surprised at how country "Achin' To Be" sounded at the time.
or, for that matter, how "Darlin' One" sounded like something to be played at a HS prom.

Never Felt Like This Before ... along with a couple short things on Stereo it helped usher in the period he's in now of short clips of songs but it was weird at the time, especially for a song that's short but still listed on the tracklist. Also the most purely out-there of his forays into maudlin sentimental lounge music, which is what makes it great. Also that he sounds like he means it.

androgynous, night club jitters, self defence...songs like these seem to come from out of nowhere.Angels Walk seems like the "least there" of any Westerberg song.I don't think he's ever been that vague lyrically, but it might have opened the door to something like Bookmark.Who knows?

"It's Hard to Wave in Handcuffs" from the Replacements years and "Self Defense" from the solo years.

I would say much of SG is a little different. Self Defense, Bookmark. just unusual to have Paul and the piano only. Just as someone mentioned Never Felt Like This Before. That said, I really like SG but it took a while.

I have to agree with dee. There's been at least one out-of-the-blue song on each album, starting with 'Johnny's Gonna Die,' continuing with' Go,' 'Within Your Reach,' etc. Paul never was content to leave a curve ball left unthrown and still isn't. Would have to give the current nod to 'It'll Never Die.' Was there a copy of 'Some Girls' in the deck for a while?

"Silver Naked Ladies" is pretty odd. "Mannequin Shop (chop, chop)" from the same album is possibly even odder.. CF
