Just a few disjointed thoughts (which fit the jumbled, disjointed nature of the record)
I love the transition from "Sweet Prince" to "Outta My System." Thematically, emotionally, whatever. It works perfectly.
My painfully linear brain is begging me to cut this up into separate tracks. I'm not going to, though. This week's been hectic for me, and I really haven't had the chance to listen to it without any other distractions, but if Paul meant for this to be digested in one sitting, as one continuous... thing, so be it.
Someone mentioned how will this play on radio, if at all. I have a Paul-friendly station in my town, and I expect a few of the programmers to at least play something from it, as the defacto "single."

"Devil Raised A Good Boy" ROCKS! Paul's guitar thru the whole song is killer.

"Devil Raised A Good Boy" ROCKS! Paul's guitar thru the whole song is killer. I agree. That's the first single for me. Who will be the first to play it? Tomorrow (Thursday) is New Releases Day on WXRT in Chicago. They have played the Mats and Paul for a long time. It will be interesting to see what they do. You can listen online if you like. www.wxrt.com/

Not sure if he's still around these parts, but the last song with Johnny(?) keeps reminding me of Nudge's cover of Attitude.
That's great.

I've listened to the whole thing a few times now and while I really, really enjoy it, I end each listen being reminded of a "Musical Garage Sale". It's as though Paul cleaned out his junk drawer of song snippets, messed up tracks and songs that maybe didn't turn out as good as he'd hoped and then he put them all together and priced it like an item at a garage sale (49 cents).
That's not a bad thing by any means, but I can't shake that feeling.
Hopefully it will mean that his spring cleaning is done and now there's room for the new songs.

For the first time, I'm listening on my home stereo (as opposed to my Ipod or computer speakers). I swear, with every listen I love it more. This album (and yes, it's a true album) for the first time collects every aspect of Paul, including some of his more annoying but lovable traits, into one package. The perfect power pop songwriter, the grizzled blues-rock vet, the reclusive artist, the sensitive yet sarcastic balladeer, the aging punker, the child of 70's AM radio, the ADD personality who can't go longer than a minute without moving on to other ideas. It's all here, and more.

How many weddings has this guy ruined?

So here's an idea...
Since Paul's allegedly recording up a storm, & the d/l appears to be a success, how about a song a month deal?
I'm calling you out, Westerberg. You got the chops to bust my eardrums once a month (every 49 days)?

You got the chops to bust my eardrums once a month (every 49 days)? "Terri/Marry" sounds "Singles" soundtrack-era. I don't think this is all new stuff. (Obviously, "Everyone is Stupid" and "Outta My System" aren't new.)

On a punked-up number he sings a lyric that is hard to make out but sounds like “Devil Ray’s a good boy.” ... With “49:00,” Westerberg proves that he is still not only interesting, but a decent songwriter as well. I'm surprised this guy can spell abcnews

18 listens in and it keeps on getting better. hitting the road tomorrow, and already know what i'm going to be listening to. taking 49:00 out for a proper spin -- cranked to the 11s and windows wide f^ckin open.
by the way "strange and grandiose," loved your line about how many marriages Paul's ruined. wasn't too sure about the "Singles" reference, though. it's more "Eventually," but strangely is how everything thrown together on this magnificent mosiaic stew crackles and bangs as something fresh, new and so delictable. was at a bar last night and they had the jukebox going, and all i could think of was when i could get home and listen to 49:00 again. it's become my new addiction.

"Be My Darling" is way good. Right from the "Let it go" & that repetitive guitar intro. The 1st time Paul sings "Fallen deep, A pair of help-me eyes" is perfect.
100,000 Pieces is also great. Digging the opening verse. Fucker's rockin'. Plus it shudders into "I'm Clean", one of the best Grandpa Boy tunes yet. Love the way the Paul rings the chorus thru out.

I don't think this is all new stuff. That's cool. I don't care when the hell it was written. Long as I haven't heard it before, I'm good.

Very cool. Paul just clearing out some tunes with a Garage sale on garage music at garage sale prices!!!
Classic Mats move. Profit margins on this "album" will probably be his best considering the cost of production and artwork were next to nothing...

Confession: I deleted my first downloaded version of 49:00 thinking I had a corrupted file. I am now in deep, deep love with the song(s). Still, I would love an uncluttered version of "Goodnight Sweet Prince." The break-in on that song seems like an attempt to "soften the blow" of the raw, haunting, nearly unbearable emotion infusing his voice. It is a very hard song to listen to because of the pain in it. Still, I want my PW emotion neat--no ice, no olives, no distracting paper umbrella, i.e. no break-in.
Now if my boyfriend would stop interrupting me as I listen to 49:00 I will be able to commit this beautiful piece to memory. Right now it's all in pieces in my head, which I guess is what the man was after. Bits of beauty, pain, language, music. It's as good as it gets. I love it.

Anyone else catch the 3 second snippet of AAA around the 20:47 mark? That's not AAA.... It's a brief reprisal of "You're My Girl"... The two songs do sound sort of similar... CF
