Is that a guitar making that wonderful awful noise in the "Be My Darlin" part? I love that - the whole thing is very enthralling

Haven't gotten it yet, but I don't think I'm going to like it. I'm tired of the Grandpaboy, Stereo/Mono-type stuff. Hate to say it, but I may be one long-time fan who's slowly drifting away from the whole PW experience. I'm tired of the home-produced stuff, thought the solo electric tour was silly [and headache inducing], I didn't care for the soundtrack, I was underwhelmed by the Mats reissues. In my eyes, he's been in a real slump the last 6-8 years. But I'll remain open-minded. Keep playin it. If it doesn't grow on you, keep it to yerself. Yer killin' my buzz.

Does anyone else think he's saying "Terry, Terry, who you gonna marry?" in the first song? I know "Tell me" fits better but I keep hearing "Terry".

Based on what you said, I don't think you're going to like it, it makes "Folker" look like a slickly produced, big budget, studio album. But for $0.49, you can't go wrong giving it a try... And you not liking it doesn't harsh my buzz. I have a few bands that I have been just crazy about but then gradually lost interest in. Obviously PW and the Mats don't fall into that category for me but I was a hardcore REM fan for over a decade and have drifted away from them over the past 10 years...I don't hear anything special in their recent music, anything that really resonates with me. I still love the old stuff, "Talk About The Passion" came on my iPod shuffle in the car this morning and I love it as much as I did the first tiem I heard it.

The "Something is Missing" song has to be about Tommy. And that "Devil Raised a Good Boy" is definitely about Johnny Thunders. New York band in London, New Orleans flop house. And I think he just plain yells Johnny Thunders before he rips into the faux-Thunders solo.

Interesting...I'm going to have to listen to "something Is Missing" in terms of Tommy, I've been thinking it's about his dad.

That's funny Kathy because I am in the same boat with you regarding REM and today "Catapult" came on my Ipod shuffle and it was awesome. The excitement I felt when Murmer came out in '83 is the same feeling that I have now about 49;00.

I did give that a fleeting thought now that you mention it. On the other hand would he refer to either his dad or Tommy as a "midwestern shakespeare"?And then "He paints houses for a living, they should pay him to get up"? His brother? Chris?

Yeah, love this stuff but am wondering how it will be received by the general albeit hip public.
TomT: I thought WE were the HIP PUBLIC ... you mean there are others? It will be interesting to see how the casual fan reacts to this release. I mean, Paul's preachin' to the choir here. 'Cept Stegman. ;D The thing I really like about 49 is the constant flow. And there's no downers on it. He had some depressing songs over the last few releases but this is just so full of life. And the capper is at the end with Johnny on lead vocal. How cool is THAT!

I LOVE 49:00! This is the second best Westerberg release, only surpassed by Stereo/Mono...I know Paul isn't the touchy-feely type, but I have to believe this was his gift to his fans. He can't be making a dime off of this, and there is so much great material here...I can't wait to figure out some of the tunes for myself. He's a fucking genius!

There's been quite a bit of interest after hearing the price/format, and I haven't heard a complaint yet.

Yeah, I think the low price IS genius. The guy has indie cred and with this setup just about anybody who's into music can and probably WILL give it a shot.
Volume baby. It's all about word of mouth and volume. It's a big world out there and most of us are connected. He has a great opportunity to reach a helluva lot of people this way.

The short snippets give 49 an ADD vibe but I bet he started out wanting the whole songs on there but had way too many so instead of cutting some songs entirely he left his favorite line in, or that covers sampler sequence. Comes in just under 80MB for your disc burning pleasure.

I don't know about you guys but I'm ready for a tour! Now playing on Ipod shuffle "We're Comin' Out" live from Lingerie, Hollywood Ca. 1984. I swear it came on just as I started to post this. That's a freakin' sign I tell ya.

I am downloading it now, but for those who don't know, this is ranked #1 on Amazon for downloads in the Alternative Rock Category!!!
Way to go Mr. Westerberg.
I don't care if half of this is crap. It is a mere 49 cents!!!!

I'm getting through my first listen and I gotta say, damn, (not to personalize it, but) this is right where my head is at right now. 2008 has sucked royally so far, and I feel like I'm barely treading water. Somehow this is the perfect soundtrack to that. Getting pulled under sometimes, floating perfectly in others, noise, confusion, perfect clarity.
I haven't loved a release on first hear since Stereo/Mono, until now.

He's a fucking genius! no offense john in buffalo, but i passionately disagree with you on the Stereo/Mono front. i remember when i first heard that album, i was in a delta hotels top-floor suite in ottawa when i bought it, and the room had a cd player. i immediately put it on. as excited as i was when i heard it, i also found myself skipping through it before discovering how good Mono was. 49:00 is far superior than that double album, and i can't exactly explain why. maybe because it's so goddam good and complete. once again, and i'm listening to this sucker once again (all the way to "Devil ..." so far on my umpteenth listen) and i'm on board with bronxteacher in regards to this song being a hit. ... and i'm on board with everyone on this board that appreciates, no loves this sucker. ok, just got back from a drunk fest, but this album is just so compete. it's like, dare, i say, cigarettes. i need another puff. is it better than "Hootenany"? i'm scared to say, yes. is it better than "Let it Be" is it better than "Tim," my absolutely favorite album ever, dunno? (and yes, it's better than van halen's 5150, despite some folk's tastes ) ok, i'm entering sacreligous territory here, but i'm starting to be convinced that this is better than almost anything that's come out this decade except for, perhaps, Mr. Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." ... but ... help me ... goddam giddyup this is good. NOTE: i'm submitting this is the best solo album that's been put out by a 'Mats' member, post-breakup. i am, also humbly opining that it's more complete than anything The Replacements ever put out ... STOPPING SHORT OF "Tim" and "Let it Be." also note that the fact that i'm going this far, putting it ahead of most everything else that's been put out -- yes, including "Open Season" -- is up for debate, and i'm very open to be villified. i guess what i'm getting at is that this album will be the one everything -- everything that preceded it and everything that follows -- will be measured against.
