Pitchfork: The reunion rumors have been pretty strong as of late. A couple of years ago you were supposedly approached to play Coachella...
PW: I guess so. I mean, we've been offered...Chris, he doesn't want to play. He's moved on with his life to the point where he won't move back and do this. So that leaves essentially Tommy and I. I don't think we would go back and use any of the other Replacements guys. We'd probably find someone else. That's what's kept us wondering, the magic question: who's going to come and play the lead guitar?
Does anyone want to make any nominations?
Minehan? Keane? Bowe? gtrplyr?

I have a few suggestions...
Waddy Wachtel steve jones P.W. Long Charlie Sexton (just for sheer bizarro-ness) Any of the Georgia Satellites Prince Bob Mould (see Charlie Sexton) John Mayer (just so all the guys can finally get the mansions they deserve) Jack White (hmmm...that one seems pretty cool) Ryan Adams (listen, a Replacements show wouldn't be a Replacements show without a whole boatload of whupass) Angus Young Slash!!!!

If Jack White is a fan that would be very cool for him to play lead. I would love to see that.

As far as playing the songs as they are meant to be played, not playing wrong stuff, or reinterpreting too much, I thought Bowe was great on the last Westerberg tour, and seemed to have a great rapport with Paul. I wouldn't want someone who was "famous" who didn't know the songs inside and out. Having someone like Jack White would be great to cameo on a song or two, that sorta thing

I have a few suggestions... Slash!!!! Now that would be poetic justice. My only reservation is that Paul is not very tall, and I would hate to lose him onstage behind Slash's hat.

the most logical person could be Tommy's bandmate in Gnr....Richard Fortus. Fortus is a solid lead and rhythm player cut out of a Stonesy mold. He can rip a little too. He also plays with the Psychedelic Furs and has done a good amount of session work for Jesse Malin. Also, if Tommy is free for the tour, Richard would be too. I believe they are very close friends as well which is important. In my opinion, Tommy-Westy-Freese-Fortus would be a pretty kickass group....Replacements or whatever you want to call them.

I think he should go the Van Halen-route and groom little Johnny to be the drummer for a wicked three-some with Pops and Uncle Tommy.

mick jones is an inspired choice ... what 'bout joey santiago ... don't know what pixies are doing these days. since benmont tench has played on some of the solo records, what about bringing in another heartbreaker: mike campbell. always a solid, understated and under-rated picker in my book

I'd like someone with some energy and who can let it rip!

I dunno - their personality types are pretty reserved. I'd like someone with some energy and who can let it rip! i think you actually make my point here, the fact that the guitar players i proposed are reserved. i could propose eddie van halen or jimmy page, for that matter -- guys that could let it rip -- but that wouldn't serve our purpose here, would it? heck, jack white, in my opinion, would be a horrible choice because the focus of any tour would draw immediately to him and not what's truly important: that The 'Mats are together again. i bring up jack white, because what he did in producing and contributing to Loretta Lynn's last release should be regarded as a sin against music. whereas Rick Rubin got out of the way and helped Mr. Johnny Cash find his voice in this new world, white attempted to have Lynn record what sounded a bit like a pseudo-country-white stripes album that focused too much on guitars and not enough on Lynn's voice. ugh. i digress, but i have a point i'm getting to: Bobby is irreplaceable -- which i guess is ironic, since the band is, The Replacements, after all. and i made the pitch for an understated experienced guitar player that could do justice to the music, rather than draw away from the band, Paul, Tommy and, please, please, please, Chris. i don't think this is a time to form a super group, such as asia or fit a square sammy hagar peg into a round van halen hole. i want to hear the songs played as they should be, not as some established let-er-ripper might want them to be played.

Van Lear Rose is a good record, and the title track is a fantastic song. but i find all the guitar experimentation on a Loretta Lynn album to be annoying, bordering on egotistical masturbation on white's part. it's Loretta's album, and it succeeds despite white putting his grubby fingers all over it. the whole thing could've been much better with another producer, in my opinion -- rubin, perhaps, considering the job he did on the dixie chicks and chillis' albums of late. which leads me to conclude: who the hell is jack white to pretend he's in the same universe as this country legend?

Um, well I didn't refer to anything like Eddie Van Halen, just someone with some energy, as the band originally had punk rock roots. I just think someone like Petty's guitarist is the total opposite of what this band needs. As I mentioned above, I thought the guitarist on Paul's last solo tour was terrific and performed the material properly and clearly enjoyed it a lot as well

How about Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen? I know he's a fan and he would definitely have the chops to play the Bob songs. And, he's smart enough to know it's about the Mats.
