Because I love suicaine and I don't care what anybody says!!!
1. It's a wonderful lie - The first bleedin line - 'I get up from a dream and I look for rain'
2. It's a wonderful lie - 'How am I lookin...I don't want the truth' - you just feel the ache all over when he says that.
3. Its a wonderful lie - The instrumental break and the way Paul hums the melody over it.
4. Its a wonderful lie - The whole God damn song. Its the very definition of 'quiet is the new loud' in that its totally minimalist and conveys emotions that go right up to 11. Best start to a Paul album ever in my opinion.
5. Self defense - The way Paul totally defies normal sequencing policies by starting the album slow and mellow and getting EVEN MORE slow and mellow on the second track. REALLY threw me first time I heard it. That takes balls.
6. Self defense - the invention of 'rock and roll teeth'!!
7. Best thing that never happened - the way that rugged, swaggering guitar creeps up after Self Defense.
8. Best thing that never happened - the la, la, la's that accompany the chorus.
9. Best thing that never happened - The delivery of the 'Now I wouldn't do that' line.
10. Lookin out forever - 'Like a stone, hmmmm, hmmmmm, on a grave'
11. Lookin out forever - 'Yeah, I think of her, every once in a while.............forever'.
12. Lookin out forever - The total emotional wreckage Paul conveys when he sings 'God, I don't belong'............................
13. .......and the totally life affirming guitar solo that follows.
14. Lookin out forever - The very last 'YEA-EA-EA-EA-EAH'. Sounds like he's about to cough up his lungs or something.
15. Born for me - 'When the loneliest eyes, and the emptiest arms, finally decide to meet'
16. Born for me - '.......with anuu-uu-ther girl...................yeah'......(cue major goosebumps!!)
17. .........and then THAT piano solo. The campaign for Paul to follow Folker with a record of just voice and piano starts here!!
18. Tears rolling up our sleeves - 'Pregnant for minutes and bored for hours'
19. Tears rolling up our sleeves - 'We're identically sad' (the lyrics on Suicaine are practically all genius)
20. Fugitive kind - The lovely understated intro and then.....
21. ................'IS THIS WHERE I BELONG?'
22. Fugitive kind - 'We can walk down the street with light bulbs on our heads'
23. Fugitive kind - I'M A BAD IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME........AND I'LL NEVER FORGET WHERE I STARTED FROM......
24. ....................and the way he's still squeezing every ounce of emotion out of the guitar solo when he sings that line!!
25. Sunrise always listens - Well, because the sunrise does always listen. Believe me - I've tried it.
26. Sunrise always listens - The little fragments of guitar that pepper the song and really round it off.
27. Sunrise always listens - The way he sings 'And threes no one here to hear just what.....I SAID' at the end. Great line but truly gut wrenching delivery. Stays with you for hours after the song is over.
28. Whatever makes you happy - The way it comes in and breaks the melancholic mood for a few minutes.
29. Whatever makes you happy - The 'I'm pretty sure....isn't me' bit with a bonus for the little baby's cry.
30. Actor in the street - The entire lyric is genius. Great example of Paul leaving a lot open for the listener's own interpretation.
31. Actor in the street - The bit when the cello and drums come in. So sad and mournful.
32. Bookmark - 'Too restless for education, craves only entertainment' - amazing line and the way he pronounces 'entertainment' gets a bonus point. In fact, the whole vocal delivery on this song is just incredible.
33. Bookmark - the very last few seconds and the sadness as Paul signs off with 'a long forgotten bookmark'.
