I kid you not! Last night I got to witness Paul onstage at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis. He got up with a cover band, Retro Fit, and played from 8 til about midnight with them. Some of the songs he did were, Tired of Waiting For You- the Kinks. Some Bowie. A ton of Stones. A whole lot of songs. It was incredible.

Dammit, the man is coming out of his basement and I'm not catching him! He's doing what Neil Young and Crazy Horse used to do in SF back in the early 80's. Neil would pay off the house band and play an unannounced concert or he'd have a tiny sign up saying "Neil Young and Crazy Horse, $5". How did Paul and the Band sound?

It sounded great! There was some mess ups , but it just made it more fun! I feel pretty fortunate to have caught it.

Wondering, did he announce anything as off of Folker?
And is this band Retro Fit any good or a cover band?

Ok everyone in Mpls, you're going to have to start going out to the clubs every night in case Paul shows up so you can report back to us!

Actually it was a party for his wife, she had gotten her masters, so they threw a party, and paul played with the cover band, so I knew ahead of time, so it wasn't like he just jumped up and played, sorry if I gave that impression. Retro Fit is apparently a cover band, and a mighty good one if I do say. Paul didn't mention anything about Folker.

If he did this more often, he would be about a thousand times better than he is. I really did see Dan Baird playing Chuck Berry songs in Nashville and he was obviouly just doing it for fun. That's what musicians do. They play music.
I think a lot of Stereo/Mono is excellent, 'Let the Bad Times Roll' and 'Eyes Like Sparks' two of the best songs he ever wrote. But a lot of it isn't excellent by any stretch of the imagination. And in my allegedly humble opinion, a lot of his stuff since '87 has come across as really forced and stale. Forced genius songwriter, forced rowdy rocker. It just rings hollow to me. And it may be because he started listening less and less to other musicians, whether it was Tommy in the last days of the band, or whoever else with the solo stuff, and got into some self-reliant ego thing. I have all the records and when I listen to them some of it seems so second-guessed, so much from the head, so little from the heart.
I'm just as much a shut-in as anybody, so I get it and all, but I wish he would just go out and play, because he is a great guitar player, and a great musician, and if he does, all that spontanaeity will probably come back and he'll probably come out with something excellent.

Sorry, the 400 Bar is a subscriber to Clear Channel booking services. I won't go there no matter who is playing. Clear Channel SucksBesides Artimus Pyle/Sunday Morning Einsteins/Misery were playing down the street at the Triple Rock.

So if you knew ahead of time, and presumably other Westy fans knew ahead of time, would it be too much to hope that someone may have recorded it? A four hour show of cover tunes?! This just became the Holy Grail of Westerberg bootlegs.

DAMMIT ALL TO HELL!!!
I was in Minneapolis this weekend with my son to see the Get Up Kids (and Dashboard Confessional and others less interesting). Before the show we loaded up the jukebox in the bar with Soul Asylum and the Jayhawks (the only two good discs on the damn machine). The bartender complimented us and after finding out I was a 'mats fan asked if we were going to teh surprise show. I thought he was just blowing smoke up my ass...he babbled about how it was for somebody's graduation.
And it really happened? I'm pissed.

I guess it was quite a busy weekend at the 400 Club. From what I understand, on Saturday, the night before PW's appearance, Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, Marc Perlman, Tim O'Reagan, Gary Louris, Jim Boquist and Kraig Johnson played a hastily arranged set. The gig was all the more poignant given the recent news regarding Mueller.
If you haven't heard, Karl is apparently quite sick (although I suppose its a good sign that he showed up on Saturday night and sat in for a few songs). For those interested, below is the text of the official press release regarding the situation:
Karl Mueller, longtime member and co-founder of the band Soul Asylum, has been diagnosed with throat cancer (cancer of the esophagus). After a short stay at the hospital, they are treating the cancer aggressively and confidently from his home in Minneapolis, where he lives with his wife, Mary Beth.
Karl was diagnosed two weeks before the band was scheduled to commence recording their 10th studio album. The band has postponed the recording until July when Karl will be finished with his treatment.
Well-wishers can send cards or messages to: Karl Mueller c/o 360 Music Group PO Box 581486 Minneapolis, MN 55458

Say MPLS,
Any chance of me getting a set of photos from the 400 Bar show? I would be glad to compensate you for your effort.
Please email me at danc55344@yahoo.com if you can.
Thank you,
Dan Contreras

imagine throat cancer and then imagine it going away. think healthy thoughts for him (like a prayer) and visualize beautiful, healthy esophageal tissue. i think it's possible that dedicated willpower helps, and i honestly don't care if you people think I'm nuts.
perhaps MPLS could share the pics with everyone?
